The Minnesota Vikings told running back Alexander Mattison that they plan to release him, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Mattison has been with the Vikings since they selected him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He signed a two-year, $7-million deal with the club last offseason.

The 25-year-old took over the starting job in 2023 after the team released veteran running back Dalvin Cook.

Mattison struggled in the starter role, averaging only 3.9 yards per carry on 180 attempts. He never eclipsed 100 rushing yards in a single contest and tallied zero rushing scores. Minnesota's offense ranked 29th in yards per carry in 2023.

The Boise State product has 2,370 rushing yards in 75 career contests.
