Ravens claim Johnson, ineligible to play in postseason
The Baltimore Ravens claimed Diontae Johnson off waivers one day after the Houston Texans released the wide receiver, according to the league's transaction wire.
Johnson is ineligible to play in the postseason and won't officially join the Ravens until Feb. 10, one day after the Super Bowl. However, he's an impending unrestricted free agent.
By claiming Johnson, Baltimore could receive a compensatory pick in the 2026 draft depending on his contract in free agency.
Johnson asked the Texans to release him, ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime reports.
The 28-year-old was upset in the locker room after Houston's wild-card round victory over the Los Angeles Chargers due to his lack of playing time, per Bien-Aime. Teammates Joe Mixon and Azeez Al-Shaair reportedly tried to comfort and encourage him.
Johnson suited up for the Ravens earlier this season, appearing in four games for Baltimore after the club acquired him from the Carolina Panthers before the trade deadline. However, the Ravens waived Johnson after he served a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team following his refusal to enter a contest against the Philadelphia Eagles in December.
The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Johnson in the third round in 2019. His best season came in 2021 when he recorded 107 catches for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns.
