There is no confirmation that Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will be back on the sideline next season.

The 67-year-old initially informed the team he was retiring, but the Eagles talked him into staying for at least one more year, sources told Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice. The franchise has refrained from commenting on Fangio's status thus far, leaving the door open for him to change his mind again.

Philadelphia has put forth a stout defense under Fangio, ranking second in points allowed in 2024 and fifth in 2025. Fangio's defense was a key reason why the Eagles won Super Bowl LIX last February.

The Eagles contacted their former defensive coordinator and ex-Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon about a potential return after Fangio's initial decision to retire, Kempski reports. Gannon has since signed on with the Green Bay Packers to run their defense.

Philadelphia also planned to reach out to Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who is reportedly disgruntled after his team passed on him for their head coaching job.

The Eagles have already undergone change at the coordinator position on the other side of the ball, bringing in Sean Mannion to replace Kevin Patullo as offensive corodinator.
