Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen gave some insight into the role two-way player Travis Hunter will assume on offense this season.
Coen said there will be situational packages and moments in which the team wants to put the ball in Hunter's hands - a different approach than the club took during his rookie season, which the head coach admitted was perhaps an overload.
"Where you want him in there is contested (plays), tough catches, trying to get the ball in his hand because he can make you miss in a phone booth," Coen told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "Quick screens, bubbles ... what that looks like as a rep count, I still have no clue."
Coen added: "He's got to be able to know X, F, both those positions within the game plan and not the whole playbook. Third down, red zone, two minute. Specific offensive plays in the normal flow of the game we will package him in, as opposed to, 'Look, bro, you've got to know the whole offense.' That was a little much last year."
The Jaguars chose Hunter with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 draft after he swept the college football landscape as a dynamic two-way player at Colorado. He continued playing on both sides of the ball upon entering the NFL, but his rookie season was limited to seven games due to a knee injury. He played 324 snaps on offense and 162 snaps on defense last year.
Jacksonville is again planning to utilize the 23-year-old as a two-way player this season, though he's expected to spend more time at cornerback rather than receiver.
Coen added that he thinks the staff has a "better feel" for what Hunter is best at and where he's needed.
Hunter arrived to Jaguars training camp stronger and faster. He put on 10 pounds of muscle this offseason and was clocked running 22.6 mph during camp.
