Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiyah Love is dealing with a high ankle sprain, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Love isn't expected to play again this preseason, according to Schefter, who adds that the Cardinals are hoping the No. 3 overall pick can be available for their season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 13.

Love sustained the injury during his preseason debut Thursday. Arizona head coach Mike LaFleur initially said that he didn't believe the ailment was major. He later added that the first-year tailback would miss at least one week at training camp.

The 21-year-old entered the NFL as the highest-drafted running back since Saquon Barkley (second overall in 2018) after a standout career at Notre Dame.

Love topped 1,300 scrimmage yards in each of the past two seasons while scoring 40 touchdowns in that span.
