The Cleveland Browns are expected to decide whether to stick with Deshaun Watson at quarterback after Sunday's matchup with Tampa Bay Buccaneers, reports NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The Browns host the Carolina Panthers in their home opener Sept. 27 and could give the nod to Shedeur Sanders instead.
Watson earned the starting job based on his training camp performance and experience. However, Browns officials were reportedly frustrated by the 31-year-old's showing in Cleveland's 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1.
Head coach Todd Monken said it would be "unfair" to blame the veteran passer for the offense's struggles in the Browns' season opener.
Watson completed 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards, throwing one touchdown and an interception against Jacksonville. The three-time Pro Bowler is 9-11 as Cleveland's starter. He pushed back against the notion that he needs a strong showing Sunday to keep his role in Week 3.
"I think the media has this expectation that I'm supposed to throw 400 yards and five touchdowns every week," Watson said Wednesday.
