Mammoth sign Schmaltz to 8-year, $64M extension
The Utah Mammoth signed forward Nick Schmaltz to an eight-year contract extension carrying an $8-million average annual value Wednesday.
Schmaltz was scheduled for unrestricted free agency this summer and earned a notable raise from his current $5.85-million cap hit.
The 30-year-old has notched 59 points in 65 games this season, which ranks second on Utah behind captain Clayton Keller. Schmaltz has been with the Mammoth/Arizona Coyotes since a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks in 2018.
Utah has handed out long-term extensions to Schmaltz, Logan Cooley, JJ Peterka, Dylan Guenther, and Mikhail Sergachev since relocating from Arizona. Keller and recently acquired defenseman MacKenzie Weegar are also under contract through 2028 and 2031, respectively.
The Mammoth are projected to have $17.9 million in cap space this offseason after locking in Schmaltz, according to PuckPedia.
Utah holds a six-point lead on the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference with 17 games remaining. The Mammoth missed the playoffs in their inaugural campaign, and the Coyotes hadn't reached the postseason since 2019-20.
