Avalanche sign Kulak, Burns to new contracts

The Colorado Avalanche signed pending unrestricted free agent defensemen Brett Kulak and Brent Burns to new contracts Friday.

Kulak's new pact is for five years and carries a cap hit of $4.5 million, while Burns' agreement is for one year with a cost of $850,000, reports TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

The Avalanche acquired Kulak from the Pittsburgh Penguins prior to March's trade deadline. He had a quiet regular season in Colorado but made his mark in the playoffs, notching five points in 13 games and scoring the series-winning overtime goal against the Minnesota Wild in Round 2.

Burns, 41, joined the Avalanche on a one-year, $1-million contract last summer. He recored 35 points in 82 games while averaging 18:52 per contest, his lowest mark since 2013-14.

The Avalanche now have six defensemen signed for next season. Colorado president and general manager Joe Sakic recently said he's hopeful the club will sign superstar Cale Makar to a lucrative extension this offseason.
