The Pittsburgh Penguins are intrigued by the idea of trading for Seattle Kraken center Shane Wright, sources told The Athletic's Josh Yohe.
Wright, the 2022 No. 4 pick, has reportedly been on the trade block since at least January. The Kraken were reportedly looking to use to their center depth to land an impact winger before the trade deadline. It's unclear if that would still be their motive behind moving Wright, considering Seattle re-signed trade-deadline pickup Bobby McMann and added Mackie Samoskevich this offseason.
Wright is coming off a tough season in which he only managed 12 goals and 27 points in 74 games. In 2024-25, he set career highs of 19 goals and 44 points in 79 appearances.
The 22-year-old, who was granted exceptional status into the OHL at 15 years old, was widely expected to be picked first overall in 2022 before sliding on draft day.
Ron Francis, who was Seattle's general manager when the Kraken drafted Wright, now works in the Penguins' front office as a senior adviser.
Pittsburgh's center options behind Sidney Crosby include Evgeni Malkin, Tommy Novak, Ben Kindel, Blake Lizotte, and Hendrix Lapierre.
