The Carolina Hurricanes signed captain Jordan Staal to a one-year contract extension worth up to $10 million, the team announced Tuesday.
The contract has a base salary of $900,000, a signing bonus of $4 million, and it contains $5.1 million in performance bonuses. Staal's cap hit for the 2027-28 campaign will be $4.9 million.
Staal, 38, won the Conn Smythe for playoff MVP last season as the Hurricanes captured the Stanley Cup. He had eight goals and 12 points in 19 playoff games after notching 20 goals and 36 points in 75 regular-season contests.
"Jordan is not only our captain, he's the bedrock of the culture we've established in this organization," Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky said. "His leadership and on-ice performance throughout last season and especially in the playoffs was a primary factor in bringing the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh."
Staal enters his eighth season as Carolina's captain. He also co-captained the Hurricanes in 2017-18 with Justin Faulk.
Staal has 318 goals and 747 points in 1,403 career games with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Hurricanes. Carolina acquired Staal in 2012, and he ranks second in franchise history in games played (972).
