The Detroit Red Wings and forward Alex DeBrincat are closing in on a seven-year extension with roughly a $13-million cap hit, reports Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

DeBrincat has four goals and eight points through six contests after tallying 41 goals and 85 points last season. He recorded two goals and three points in the Red Wings' 5-4 overtime loss against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

The extension includes a full no-trade clause in the first four seasons and a modified no-trade clause in the final three years, reports PuckPedia.

The 28-year-old was set to be an unrestricted free agent in July. DeBrincat has a $7.875-million cap hit this season.

DeBrincat has 298 goals and 603 points in 702 career games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Ottawa Senators, and Red Wings. He's scored 41 goals three times.

Detroit acquired DeBrincat from the Senators in July 2023 for Dominik Kubalik, Donovan Sebrango, a first-round pick, and a fourth-round selection.

A DeBrincat extension is a major piece of business for the Red Wings on the heels of a turbulent offseason.

Steve Yzerman stepped down as general manager in July, and Shawn Horcoff was named interim GM in September. Dylan Larkin remains on the Red Wings despite an active trade request and was stripped of the captaincy before training camp. Restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson is still unsigned.
