New Jersey Devils goaltender Connor Hellebuyck revealed that a situation involving his family was one of the reasons he asked the Winnipeg Jets to move him.

"I know my decision to request a trade was disappointing and frustrating for many people, especially those who supported me throughout my career," Hellebuyck said Wednesday in a letter to Jets fans on Instagram. "I understand those feelings, and I want everyone to know it was an extremely difficult decision.

"There was several considerations that went into my decision, including some very challenging circumstances involving my family. After a lot of thought and discussion, we ultimately felt that making a change was the best thing for our family. We've chosen to keep those personal circumstances private, and I hope people can respect that."

The Jets traded Hellebuyck to the Devils in late October, ending a drawn-out saga. The three-time Vezina Trophy winner and Olympic gold medalist didn't suit up for Winnipeg this season after being suspended by the team for failing to report to training camp.

Hellebuyck will return to Winnipeg for the first time Nov. 10.

"To the great Jets fans who supported me and my family, thank you." Hellebuyck added. "I'll never forget the pride I felt representing Winnipeg, and I wish the Jets and the entire community nothing but the best."

Hellebuyck is the Jets' all-time leader in goalie wins (345) and shutouts (45).

The 33-year-old signed a seven-year, $59.5-million extension in October 2023. The former Hart Trophy winner has five years remaining on his deal, including this season.
