Champ helps fund golf scholarship at historically Black university

Cameron Champ donated $40,000 to Prarie View A&M - a historically Black university - to help fund two scholarships for student-athletes on its Men’s and Women’s golf teams, the school announced on Thursday.

Champ, who donated the money through his foundation with the help of the Chevron Corporation, was inspired to contribute after Augusta National named Lee Elder - the first Black golfer to compete in the Masters - as an honorary starter for the 2021 Masters.

“When Lee Elder walked on the Augusta grounds, it sent a message: ‘We belong,'" Champ said.

The scholarship will be named in honor of Champ's late grandfather, Mack, who introduced the sport to Champ and inspired other minority golfers to take up the game.

“My grandfather had such an incredible influence on my life and always inspired me in many ways,” Champ said. “I’m so grateful for Pops introducing me to the game of golf, but also for teaching me that there’s so much more to life than golf. He always stressed the importance of giving back and paying it forward."
