FIFA officials in Toronto to evaluate city as potential host site for 2026 World Cup

A delegation from FIFA was in Toronto Monday to conduct inspections as part of ongoing efforts to determine which North American cities the organization will select to host games at the 2026 World Cup.

Toronto is one of 23 cities under consideration to host the tournament, which will take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

FIFA is in the process of visiting all of the cities shortlisted last summer. Montreal and Edmonton are the other Canadian cities under examination.

The soccer governing body expects to finalize the 16 host cities at the end of the year.

FIFA Vice President and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani and Chief Tournaments and Events Officer Colin Smith will meet with Toronto officials, including mayor John Tory, during Monday's inspection.

The multi-nation competition will be the first World Cup held in North America since the United States hosted it in 1994. The event will also mark the biggest turnout in the tournament's history after FIFA expanded the field to 48 teams.
