LONDON (AP) — Novak Djokovic knows just what it means to have to live up to lofty expectations after years of titles and trophies.

He’s 39 and is a 24-time Grand Slam champion who now plays only sparingly.

So he’s better positioned than almost anyone else to analyze what Serena Williams — a seven-time Wimbledon singles champion just like he is — must have been feeling after losing at the All England Club earlier this week in the first singles match that she played in nearly four years.

“People always expect you to play at your best because they’re used to seeing you dominate the sport for many years,” Djokovic said. “She’s 44. She has two children. Coming back, it’s normal that she still is not at her best in terms of movement. She hasn’t played a match in so many years. People need to cool off a little bit with judgment and criticism and everything. Let’s just enjoy the greatness, who she is, what she represents to the sport.”

Williams was beaten 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 by 20-year-old Maya Joint of Australia in the first round on Tuesday but showed she could be competitive with an opponent less than half her age after being away for so long.

Williams still cranked out serves faster than 120 mph and dictated points with her heavy groundstrokes. But movement was an issue and the 87th-ranked Joint was able to win more of the big points by hitting beyond the reach of the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion.

“Her wanting to give it a try and just come back is an incredible gift for our sport," Djokovic said. "I think people sometimes — I don’t know why — they don’t appreciate that enough. They just start to speculate, judge or whatever. It’s like, ‘Hey, guys, enjoy. You have the greatest ever to come play for you, to bring more attention to your sport.’

“I really support Serena. Always have. Hopefully she’s going to play more,” Djokovic added.

Williams was given wild card invitations to play both singles and doubles at Wimbledon and it remains to be seen whether she will still play doubles with older sister Venus.

Williams announced on Wednesday that she tweaked her right knee toward the end of the first set against Joint. She said she still hopes to play doubles but the Williams’ sisters opener against Colombia’s Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra of Argentina was only the remaining first-round match not on the schedule for Friday. There's is still a possibility they could play Saturday.

At last year’s U.S. Open, Djokovic publicly challenged Serena to return.

“When somebody challenges her, she never refuses. So I challenge Serena: Come back on the tour next year,” Djokovic said in 2025.

Now, Djokovic wants to see Serena play this year’s U.S. Open.

“I hope for the sake of tennis and all of us that we be able to see her more,” Djokovic said. “I assume that U.S. Open is somewhere where she would like to play. Playing in her home Slam would be amazing for her and for everyone else.”

Djokovic won his second-round match against Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets Wednesday night on Centre Court — 24 hours after watching Serena’s match on the same court on TV.

“What she’s doing is incredible. Epic,” Djokovic said. “I’ve always been a fan of Serena. I’m sure she wanted and expected to at least win one match or more. Knowing how competitive she is, the mind of a champion that she has, she’s not happy with just showing up on the court. She wants to win.”

Vonn wasn't expecting Serena to 'show all her cards'

Lindsey Vonn, another 40-plus athlete who recently made a comeback, struggled at times in her first season back on the World Cup skiing circuit after nearly six years of retirement.

But Vonn was the top World Cup downhiller last season at age 41 until her horrific crash at the Milan Cortina Olympics in February left her with a severely fractured left leg.

Vonn attended Serena's comeback in doubles at Queen's last month and last week told The Associated Press ahead of Williams' singles return, “I would expect for her to play well but not show all her cards yet.”

LONDON (AP) — Iga Swiatek is the defending champion. Aryna Sabalenka is the No. 1 women’s singles player.

Serena Williams is the star, though, at Wimbledon.

The 44-year-old Williams' presence has been emanating throughout SW19 — the famous post code of Wimbledon — as she prepares to play her first singles match at the event in four years Tuesday when she faces No. 53 Maya Joint in the first round.

Mirra Andreeva, who just won the French Open, was basically crossing her fingers when the Wimbledon draw was announced.

“I was watching like this because I don’t think anyone in the draw would have wanted to play against Serena," the smiling Russian teenager said Saturday. “I’m going to speak for myself. I wouldn’t want to play against Serena. I would be just very nervous.”

Williams had been away from the sport since her farewell at the 2022 U.S. Open but she accepted a wild-card entry to play women’s doubles with her sister Venus, who is 46. And then she accepted another to play singles.

Williams’ most-recent appearance at Wimbledon was in 2022 when she lost in the opening round to Harmony Tan, who was then-ranked 115th. The American great walked away from tennis — she described it as “evolving” away — after losing in the third round to Ajla Tomljanovic at Flushing Meadows. Her second daughter was born in 2023.

Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon singles title winner, could meet Swiatek in the third round.

Venus provides some motivation

Serena Williams officially returned to tennis earlier this month in a doubles match with 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko at the Queen’s Club grass-court tournament.

“Unexpectedly, before her first match she asked me did I have any motivational quotes I use for myself,” Venus Williams said Saturday. “I told her what I was using at the time. I don’t know if that helped or not. She did win the match.”

The Williams sisters will play their first-round doubles match against Colombia’s Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra of Argentina.

Serena and Venus have won 14 Grand Slam titles together in doubles, including six at Wimbledon. Their first two doubles titles at the All England Club, in 2000 and 2002, came as wild cards.

“For us it was about the titles, we wanted the Grand Slam titles. We just wanted to bring them home,” Venus said. “We did pretty good.”

Djokovic inspired by Serena

Novak Djokovic calls Serena Williams' tennis comeback “inspirational” and “epic.”

“That’s what I told her,” Djokovic said Saturday.

“I see her in the gym more than I have, I think, seen her when she was at her prime,” Djokovic, a 24-time major champion, said of Williams, a 23-time major winner in singles. “It tells me that she really wants this to work out the best way possible.”

Djokovic added: “I always admired her career, her journey, her story. Of course, Venus’, as well.”

Gauff and Sabalenka too

Coco Gauff, the No. 7 seed at Wimbledon, said Serena and Venus were the “biggest” inspiration on her.

“I played the sport because of them, believed that I could do things because of them. I look up to them a lot,” she said.

Sabalenka added: “It’s amazing what she’s doing. Also it’s Serena Williams, everyone was talking about that. She’s bringing more eyes on tennis. It’s a good thing for tennis. I’m really excited to see her play.”

Coco Gauff, the No. 7 seed at Wimbledon, said Serena and Venus were the “biggest” inspiration on her.

“I played the sport because of them, believed that I could do things because of them. I look up to them a lot,” she said.

LONDON (AP) — Serena Williams will face an opponent less than half her age when she plays 20-year-old Maya Joint in the first round at Wimbledon for her first singles match in nearly four years.

The seven-time Wimbledon singles champion, who is 44, accepted a wild-card entry to the grass-court Grand Slam, where she’ll also compete in doubles with her older sister Venus, who turned 46 last week.

It's all part of a tennis comeback that started with two doubles warmup matches but kicked into high gear Sunday when the All England Club announced Serena would play singles. Brackets were set in Friday's draw.

Joint was born in Michigan — as was Williams — but represents Australia through her father. She is ranked No. 53 and made her Wimbledon debut last year, losing in the first round to Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-2.

“It’s an honor. I always dreamed about playing Serena Williams,” Joint said. “If you told me 10 years ago that I’d be playing her first round at Wimbledon, that’s just crazy.

“I hope it’s on Centre Court, that would be pretty cool. You just have to play the ball. You can’t really think about who you are playing because I’ll just get too nervous. I’ll just take it one ball at a time.”

Joint won the grass-court Eastbourne Open last year for one of her two WTA tour-level singles titles.

Williams hasn't played a singles match since a third-round loss to Ajla Tomljanovic at the 2022 U.S. Open. At the time, she said she didn’t want to use the word “retiring” and instead declared she was “evolving” away from tennis. Her second daughter was born in 2023.

Tomljanovic said she hopes Joint “enjoys the moment.”

“Especially after (Serena) officially retired four years ago, no one thought that they’d get another chance to play her,” Tomljanovic, an Australian, said Friday at Wimbledon.

Williams is “here to win,” Tomljanovic added.

“You never lose that champion mentality. Her coming into the draw means that she thinks she can win,” she said.

Williams' most recent appearance at Wimbledon was in 2022 when she lost in the opening round to then-115th-ranked Harmony Tan.

If Williams beats Joint on Tuesday, she may face rising Filipino star Alexandra Eala, who is seeded 29th, in the second round. She could meet defending champion Iga Swiatek in the third round.

Swiatek opens against Taylor Townsend of the U.S. on Centre Court on Tuesday.

In a projected quarterfinals by seedings, No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka would meet French Open champion Mirra Andreeva; No. 2 Elena Rybakina, the 2022 champion, would face 2025 runner-up Amanda Anisimova; Swiatek, the No. 3 seed, would play Elina Svitolina; and No. 4 Jessica Pegula would meet Coco Gauff.

Sinner could meet Djokovic in semifinals

On the men's side, No. 1 Jannik Sinner will begin his Wimbledon title defense against Miomir Kecmanovic on Centre Court on Monday.

Sinner and Novak Djokovic, the No. 7 seed, are in the same half of the draw and could meet in the semifinals.

Sinner underwent checks following his French Open meltdown — losing in the second round amid a heat wave in Paris — and said he felt physically good after an exhibition match this week in London, which also experienced high temperatures.

Djokovic, a seven-time champion at the All England Club, will play Wu Yibing of China. Djokovic could meet third-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals.

Two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz, who lost to Sinner in the 2025 final, will miss this year’s tournament because of a wrist injury.

Wimbledon starts on Monday.

Serena and Venus in doubles

The Williams sisters are wild-card entries in the women's doubles and will play their first-round match against Colombia's Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra of Argentina.

Serena and Venus have won 14 Grand Slam titles together in doubles, including six at Wimbledon — the first in 2000 and the last in 2016. Their first two doubles titles at the All England Club, in 2000 and 2002, came as wild cards.

LONDON (AP) — Wimbledon, the oldest Grand Slam tennis tournament, starts Monday on the manicured lawns of the All England Club. Here’s what you need to know about this year’s competition.

How to watch Wimbledon on TV

— In the U.S.: ESPN, The Tennis Channel

— In Britain: BBC, TNT Sports and discovery+.

— Other countries are listed here.

Who are the defending champions?

Jannik Sinner of Italy and Iga Swiatek of Poland will attempt to repeat as champions.

The No. 1-ranked Sinner beat Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in last year’s men’s final for his first Wimbledon title. Alcaraz will miss this year’s tournament because of a wrist injury. Swiatek routed Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 to win the women’s title — her first at Wimbledon, and coming seven years after she was the girls’ singles champion.

When will Serena Williams play?

Serena Williams will be playing singles and doubles as part of her return to tennis after nearly four years out of the sport.

The seven-time Wimbledon singles champion will play Tuesday evening on Centre Court in her first-round match against 20-year-old Maya Joint.

First-round matches in women’s doubles are scheduled for Thursday and Friday. Serena and her older sister Venus will compete in doubles. Their first-round opponents are the pair of Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra.

Who plays on Centre Court on Monday?

Defending men's champion Jannik Sinner faces Miomir Kecmanovic at 1:30 p.m. (8:30 a.m. ET), to be followed by No. 1. Aryna Sabalenka vs. Teodora Kostovic. The nightcap features Novak Djokovic vs. Wu Yibing.

What is the singles schedule?

— First Round: Monday and Tuesday

— Second Round: Wednesday and Thursday

— Third Round: Friday and Saturday

— Fourth Round: Sunday (July 5) and Monday (July 6)

— Quarterfinals: Tuesday (July 7) and Wednesday (July 8)

— Women’s Semifinals: Thursday (July 9)

— Men’s Semifinals: Friday (July 10)

— Women’s Final: Saturday (July 11)

— Men’s Final: Sunday (July 12)

Who are the favorites to win?

Sinner, despite an early exit at the French Open, remains the clear betting favorite with several sportsbooks listing him around -200 to win. Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic (+400) is next as he bids for what would be his 25th Grand Slam title. Alexander Zverev (+900) is trying to win back-to-back majors, though he’s never been past the fourth round at the All England Club and lost his opening match a year ago.

The women’s singles competition is more open, with No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka (+300) a slight favorite ahead of 2022 champion Elena Rybakina (+400). Several sportsbooks put French Open champion Mirra Andreeva at +700 and defending champion Iga Swiatek at +800.

Singles champions get a 20% raise

The men’s and women’s singles champions will earn 3.6 million pounds ($4.75 million) each. The total prize money including player per diems is 64.2 million pounds ($85 million). Both represent 20% increases over 2025.

The significant increases come amid players’ calls for greater shares of revenue from Grand Slam tournaments. Top players complained about prize money at the French Open.

At Wimbledon, some top players are continuing a prize-money protest they started at Roland Garros. It involves limiting their media appearances.

What’s new this year at Wimbledon?

Wimbledon will use video review technology for the first time. The technology will be available on Centre Court, No. 1 Court — the club’s second-biggest stadium — plus four other show courts. Players will be allowed to review specific calls made by the chair umpire — such as double bounces. Video review made its Grand Slam tennis debut at the 2023 U.S. Open.

Facts about the grass-court tournament

Wimbledon’s attendance last year was a record-high 548,770, though that’s the lowest among the four majors. The other three feature main-draw action over 15 days; Wimbledon remains at 14 days. The main draw of this year’s Australian Open attracted more than 1.1 million fans. Last year’s U.S. Open surpassed 900,000 for the main draw and the recent French Open had 589,500.

The other three boast even larger attendance numbers when their qualifying events are added. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament that holds its qualifying rounds at a completely separate location — which would be remedied in the club’s expansion plans. The All England Club hopes to add a new 8,000-seat stadium and dozens of other courts in an expansion that would boost attendance and revenue.
