Baltimore seemed to be in control throughout, with Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry looking every bit as spectacular as they did last year. They gave it away at the end, but Buffalo's late comeback was also an important reminder that you are quite literally never out of a game when Josh Allen is your quarterback. Give him one too many chances, and you're going to lose.</p><p>Both defenses will need to be better going forward, but now's not the time for that conversation. The most important takeaway here is that we desperately need a rematch in January. An AFC title game would be the dream for those hoping for a little parity, but we'll take it wherever we get it. Football doesn't get much better than this.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><h3>Packers defense shines</h3><p>I went with the Packers for my preseason Super Bowl pick. One game in, I'm feeling pretty good about it.</p><p>Green Bay's offense did its part, but the defense was the story of Sunday's win over the Lions. The Packers got to Jared Goff for four sacks, took the ball away with a crucial interception, and allowed just 46 yards on the ground - Detroit's lowest output since October 2023. And this was all with Micah Parsons still settling in as a rotational player. Give the superstar trade acquisition some time to ramp up and take on a lead role, and this could be one of the best defenses in the game. As it turns out, there was nothing to worry about.</p><p>The 49ers didn't hesitate to lean on McCaffrey in their season-opening win over the Seahawks, and the star running back turned his 31 touches into 142 total yards. His nine catches were five more than any other player on San Francisco's offense. That high-volume workload may tick up even further if George Kittle misses time with the hamstring injury he suffered Sunday.</p><h3>Rams pass the test</h3><p>Matthew Stafford appears to be managing that back injury quite nicely. A 14-point output probably seems a little underwhelming on the surface, but a season-opening matchup with the Texans' defense is a tough draw. The important part is that the Rams star didn't seem the least bit limited.</p><p>Considering he's had little more than two weeks of practice since making his return, this offense should probably be trending up from here. Stafford developing a strong connection with Davante Adams, who posted four catches for 51 yards in his Rams debut, could make this an even more dangerous offense than in years past. Don't sleep on the defense, either. Keeping C.J. Stroud and the Texans out of the end zone may only be the beginning of a breakthrough year for this talented young group.</p><h3>A preseason mirage?</h3><p>I happily joined in the excitement and optimism surrounding the Seahawks' offense coming out of the preseason. A new system and an upgraded offensive line seemed to have the potential to pave the way for a highly productive ground game. Sunday's loss to the 49ers wasn't a good start on that front.</p><p>Zach Charbonnet led the way with 12 carries for 47 yards, while Kenneth Walker managed just 20 yards on 10 attempts. Opening against a Robert Saleh defense isn't the most favorable matchup, so there are probably better days ahead. Either way, Seattle needs this group to be better. Sam Darnold can't be doing the heavy lifting if the offense is going to be a suitable complement for what Mike Macdonald has built on the other side of the ball.</p><h3>Rodgers gets his revenge</h3><p>Did anyone out there have the Steelers and Jets combining for 66 points? This was shockingly the most entertaining game of the early slate, with both offenses showing far more than we possibly could have expected. In the end, Aaron Rodgers got the best of his former team in the juicy Week 1 matchup.</p><p>Still, there are plenty of reasons to be concerned about the ceiling of this Steelers offense. A 41-year-old Rodgers doesn't have many answers when the pocket starts to collapse, and averaging 2.7 yards per carry in the run game isn't exactly the most spectacular support system. But Rodgers' arm is still there. The impressive debut marks the first time a Steelers quarterback has thrown four touchdowns since Ben Roethlisberger in 2020. The run game was as advertised, with quarterback Justin Fields joining Breece Hall and the rest of a talented backfield to post a combined 182 yards and three touchdowns. That element of the game provides New York with a solid foundation. The ceiling was always going to be determined by Fields' contributions as a passer. So far, so good.</p><p>The new Jets quarterback completed 16 of 22 passes for 218 yards and one score. His 119.1 passer rating is his highest since October 2023. While asking him to pick apart a defense as a pure dropback passer is probably never going to produce good results, there's certainly a way to maximize his skill set working off this kind of run game. Fields connecting for the occasional chunk gain, as he did several times against the Steelers, could be enough to give New York the best offense we've seen from it in a long time. I don't know how many wins this team will ultimately produce, but it might be more interesting than people expected.</p><h3>Bengals avoid disaster</h3><p>A win is a win, right? Considering the way they've started pretty much every other season in the Zac Taylor era, the Bengals will happily take Sunday's victory in Cleveland. But does a one-point win over the Browns, aided by two missed kicks from Andre Szmyt, really get anyone excited about this team?</p><p>Preseason reps for the starters did little to help the offense start fast, as Joe Burrow completed 14 of 23 passes for just 113 yards. Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase were limited to a combined five catches for 59 yards, while Chase Brown averaged only 2.0 yards on 21 carries. And with the defense picking up right where it left off last year, the Bengals lost the yardage battle 327-141. Although a Week 2 matchup with Jacksonville will provide another opportunity to get things rolling, this kind of performance isn't going to fly in the challenging stretch that follows.</p><h3>Anarumo sets record straight</h3><p>Lou Anarumo being scapegoated for last season's defensive performance in Cincinnati seems even more ridiculous now. Indianapolis' defense looked like a brand new unit in the veteran coordinator's debut, putting the clamps on Mike McDaniel and Tua Tagovailoa throughout.</p><p>Tagovailoa managed just 114 yards on the day - his lowest output since September 2022 - while serving up a pair of picks and taking three sacks. The dominant defensive performance was the driving force in Indy's first Week 1 win since 2013. The logic seemed pretty simple: if a quarterback who was just run out of New York is your only other option, you should probably play the kid. At the risk of overreacting to one game against a bad Dolphins team, it sure seems like Jones has a chance to prove all the doubters wrong.</p><p>The former first-round bust was surprisingly solid in his Colts debut, completing 22 of 29 passes for 272 yards and one score. Jones also made an impact as a runner, taking seven carries for 41 yards and finding the end zone twice. According to TruMedia, it was the fifth-best game of his career by EPA/dropback. Is it possible that the fresh start and better support system open the door for a Sam Darnold-like redemption story? Next week's meeting with a ferocious Broncos defense should tell us a lot.</p><h3>Smash the panic button in Miami</h3><p>All due credit to the Colts aside, that opener was an unmitigated disaster for the Dolphins. This matchup presented the perfect opportunity for Miami to silence all lingering concerns about the organization's direction. Instead, we're immediately left wondering how long it'll be before this team tears it all down.</p><p>Tagovailoa's poor day is just the latest example of a regressing offense under McDaniel. And considering the talent issues in the secondary, this defense is in no position to do the heavy lifting. It may not be long before we start hearing about this club as a likely trade-deadline seller. Russell Wilson was expected to provide at least a modest upgrade of New York's recent quarterback play, and Dart's prospect profile suggested he might be better off sitting and learning for much of his first season. One game in, I'm starting to reconsider both positions.</p><p>Of course, part of that is a result of Dart's encouraging preseason. You want to avoid overreacting to the potentially deceiving reps we see during the summer, but there's no denying that the Ole Miss product is further along in his development than many expected. There's a reason he beat out Jameis Winston for the backup job coming out of camp. Add in an absolute dud from Wilson in the opener, and it's fair to wonder how long the Giants can keep their promising young quarterback under wraps. Dart's mobility would at least give New York some options as the offensive line continues to struggle.</p><h3>Coward decision of the week</h3><p>Mike Vrabel is a good football coach. There are plenty of reasons to believe that his ability to get the most out of his players will soon have New England headed back toward playoff contention. However, he's not perfect, and it took just one game for his conservative decision-making to show up and hurt his team.</p><p>Punting the ball to the Raiders while trailing by 10 points with less than five minutes to play in the fourth quarter is one of the worst fourth-down calls you'll see all year. Coaches have all the data they could need to avoid inexcusable calls like this. It's tough to believe that we're still doing this.</p><h3>Mixed bag for Coen's offense</h3><p>A convincing win over the Panthers was a nice way to start the Liam Coen era in Jacksonville. The even more encouraging part is that there appears to be ample room for growth.</p><p>Coen's offense didn't quite find a rhythm in the pass game in Sunday's opener. Trevor Lawrence averaged just 5.7 yards per attempt, Brian Thomas Jr. had only one catch, and Travis Hunter's six receptions produced all of 33 yards. But the run game delivered with a 200-yard day, and the defense did its part by forcing two turnovers. Still, it may only be a matter of time before the Jaguars' superstar receiver tandem starts to take over games. <p>The wait is finally over. Football is back.</p><p>Let's celebrate this joyous occasion with some bold predictions for the season ahead. The theme here is unlikely but not entirely outlandish. Consider them educated guesses at some potentially surprising results.</p><p><strong>Patrick Mahomes throws 50 TDs:</strong> The Chiefs want to get the passing game back to where it was in the early stages of the Mahomes era. Those efforts have fallen short over the last two years, but this season could be different. A speedy receiving corps and a potential star rookie at left tackle should help Mahomes rediscover that downfield magic. At that point, there might be no stopping this offense.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p><strong>Love finishes top two in MVP voting:</strong> I can't pick Love to win MVP if I have Mahomes throwing 50 touchdowns, but a runner-up finish still feels bold enough, considering the competition. The third-year starter has monster breakout potential, with the Packers having bolstered the receiver room by drafting a first-round wideout for the first time since 2002.</p><p><strong>Saquon runs for 2K again:</strong> Barkley became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in 2024. This year, he becomes the first to do it twice. It might seem like an impossible feat, but this is the same situation he was in last season. The Eagles' offense is a running back dreamland, and there should be plenty of positive game scripts to get him the necessary volume. He has a chance to match last year's historic output as long as he stays healthy.</p><p><strong>Cowboys have NFL's worst defense:</strong> The Cowboys were the NFL's No. 1 defense in EPA/play in snaps with Parsons on the field over the last four years, according to TruMedia. Without him, they were the worst. It's difficult to understand the logic in trading away that kind of a player a week before the season kicks off. Whether it's measured by EPA, yards, scoring, or the good old eye test, this unit may be in a class of its own this year.</p><p><strong>CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens combine for 3K:</strong> A hapless defense means the Cowboys could find themselves in shootouts more often than not. And with the team having an underwhelming backfield, the passing-game trio of Lamb, Pickens, and Dak Prescott should do most of the heavy lifting. The unique opportunity, along with the game-breaking talent, puts Lamb and Pickens in position to become only the fifth WR tandem to top 3,000 yards in a single season.</p><p><strong>The Bengals' offense is even better, and it doesn't matter:</strong> Speaking of elite receiver tandems (and putrid defenses), the Bengals might have the best one there is. With Joe Burrow throwing to Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, and Chase Brown starting the season as the feature back, this offense may only improve upon last year's sixth-ranked finish in EPA/play. But even that won't be enough for a playoff run if the defense is as bad as it was in 2024. We have no reason to believe it won't be.</p><p><strong>Micah Parsons posts 20 sacks:</strong> Back to Parsons for a second. This trade feels oddly reminiscent of the 2018 Khalil Mack deal. The potential payoff is greater, though, as we're talking about an even better player joining a much more complete team. The Packers are going to be defending a lot of leads this season, putting the NFL's most explosive pass-rusher in position to pin his ears back and pile up the best numbers of his career. Parsons immediately winning a Defensive Player of the Year award with his new team is the perfect way to tie a bow on this embarrassing Cowboys saga.</p><p><strong>Aidan Hutchinson gets 20, too:</strong> Hutchinson was in the middle of a truly ridiculous season before going down with a broken leg last October. His league-leading 7.5 sacks at that point were only a small part of the story, as he'd also posted 45 pressures through five games. The closest pass-rushers had 29 over that span. Now healthy, Hutchinson could pick up right where he left off.</p><p><strong>Abdul Carter breaks rookie sack record:</strong> A brief look at Carter during the preseason was all we needed to confirm the Giants got a special player at No. 3 overall. His explosiveness off the edge will be a problem from Day 1, and a stacked Giants defensive front ensures that opposing offenses can't focus their blocking schemes exclusively on him. Jevon Kearse's rookie sack record (14.5) is in play.</p><p><strong>Broncos are last undefeated team:</strong> This one is admittedly a bit of a home run swing. Matchups with the Chargers, Bengals, and Eagles are potential roadblocks to the Broncos avoiding any losses over the first two months of the season. But the first two are absolutely winnable, and this team could also give the defending champs trouble. The rest of Denver's first-half schedule is a bit of a cakewalk.</p><p><strong>Bills lose Week 1, win next 10:</strong> Buffalo is the more obvious candidate to be the last undefeated team, but a Sunday night opener against the Ravens is a tough way to start the year. I have the Bills coming up short in Week 1 and then taking full advantage of the soft schedule that follows. They don't see another 2024 playoff team until Kansas City in Week 9. And while the Bills still haven't been able to solve the Chiefs in January, they've had no such problems in their last four regular-season matchups.</p><p><strong>Bears trade for Breece Hall:</strong> Chicago's offense is primed to take a big step forward after an exciting offseason, but the running back room still stands out as a potential issue. Is Ben Johnson really going to roll with D'Andre Swift as his feature back? The Bears could turn to the trade market if the run game holds them back early in the season. The buzz surrounding the impending emergence of Braelon Allen may theoretically allow the Jets to shop Breece Hall in the middle of his contract year.</p><p><strong>Cardinals trade for Tyreek Hill:</strong> The Cardinals could be a sneaky playoff contender in the NFC. It'd be nice if they had some vertical speed opposite Marvin Harrison Jr. at receiver though. Hill may be available at the trade deadline if the Dolphins aren't in a position to compete for the postseason.</p><p><strong>Calvin Ridley leads NFL in catches:</strong> The Titans finally have a quarterback. It could be another year before they see any meaningful improvement in the win column, but Cam Ward's arrival should immediately open things up for this passing game. And with Ridley headlining an otherwise underwhelming group of pass-catchers, he might get all the targets he can handle.</p><p><strong>Davante Adams leads NFL in TDs:</strong> Adams isn't your average 32-year-old receiver. While Puka Nacua is technically Matthew Stafford's No. 1 target, the veteran free-agent addition figures to provide a much-needed upgrade in the red zone. Adams' ability to win one-on-one matchups can make him the go-to option for an offense that could be there often.</p><p><strong>Jets run the ball 600 times:</strong> Last year's Eagles became the first team since 2009 to top 600 rushing attempts in a season. The Jets won't be chewing the clock late in games nearly as often as the Super Bowl champs, but the commitment to the ground game should be similarly unwavering. This team is going to pride itself on playing good defense and running the damn ball. A suddenly strong offensive line at least gives it a chance to do so successfully.</p><p><strong>Saints go winless until December:</strong> A new coaching staff provides a fresh start, and it'll be interesting to watch these young quarterbacks when they get their chances. But wins are going to be tough to come by this year. A Week 5 meeting with the Giants is about as easy as it gets until the schedule opens up in the last month of the season.</p><p><strong>Nick Chubb bounces back with 12 TDs:</strong> Chubb being drafted as the RB44 this year, according to FantasyPros, tells me nobody is expecting him to return to form after his brutal 2023 knee injury. I understand the hesitation, but Chubb's experience and instincts could easily compensate for any athleticism he might've lost. He seems like the clear No. 1 back with Joe Mixon out indefinitely, and this new-look Texans offense may be scoring quite a bit.</p><p><strong>Christian McCaffrey posts 2K yards from scrimmage:</strong> Sticking with fantasy football narratives, this year is the latest McCaffrey was available in drafts since 2018. People were clearly scared off by last season's injuries. That may prove to be a mistake. It seems like he's back to 100% now, putting him in position to reassume his role as the centerpiece of one of the league's best offenses. McCaffrey is the unquestioned workhorse runner, and his already-significant role in the passing game could grow even further on account of the 49ers' question marks at receiver.</p><p><strong>Texans own No. 1 defense:</strong> Houston's defense quietly finished the 2024 campaign tied for fourth in EPA/play. Another year in DeMeco Ryans' system, along with an improved offense allowing this group to do what it does best, may well continue the ascent right to the top of the league. Even the best passing attacks are going to struggle against a defense with this combination of rush talent and playmakers in the secondary.</p><p><strong>Matthew Golden leads all rookie receivers:</strong> Travis Hunter, Tetairoa McMillan, and Emeka Egbuka all have a path to immediate production, but Golden's Year 1 ceiling could be the highest of the bunch. His deep speed and route-running skills are a perfect fit for Jordan Love's ability and eagerness to push the ball downfield. Golden could be a big-play machine from Day 1.</p><p><strong>Ollie Gordon scores 10 TDs:</strong> It's generally not a good idea to expect much from sixth-round rookies, but Gordon is a unique case. He probably wouldn't have been selected that late if his final year at Oklahoma State was more like the one prior, and he looked more like that version of himself this preseason. Crucially, Gordon's physicality makes him the most logical solution to Miami's short-yardage woes. He could be subbing in for De'Von Achane whenever the Dolphins are at the goal line.</p><p><strong>TreVeyon Henderson sets rookie RB record:</strong> Henderson is a superstar in the making. He flashed game-changing ability in the preseason, and it likely won't be long before the Patriots feature him as the centerpiece of this new offense. A good chunk of that early production could come in the passing game. Considering the lack of top weapons in the receiving corps, as well as Josh McDaniels' history of using pass-catching backs, we shouldn't be surprised if Henderson chases Saquon Barkley's rookie RB record of 91 catches.</p><p><strong>Travis Hunter finishes top three in both rookie awards:</strong> The Jaguars figure to use Hunter primarily as a receiver this season, and he could put up big numbers as a featured target alongside Brian Thomas Jr. But he'll play plenty of corner too. Even if he's limited to sub packages, his ability to create turnovers could easily produce the game-changing plays that also put him in the upper echelon of first-year defenders. He doesn't necessarily need to win either award to make this one of the most impressive rookie seasons we've ever seen.</p><p><strong>Packers win Super Bowl LX:</strong> It's easy to get carried away with expectations after a big signing or trade, but it's absolutely warranted in this case. Micah Parsons really could be the final piece for the Packers. He almost single-handedly elevated an otherwise subpar defense during his four years with the Cowboys. In making the move to Green Bay, he now rounds out a unit that finished the 2024 campaign tied for fourth in EPA/play. The offense could be every bit as good if Jordan Love takes the step forward many expect. Baltimore Ravens</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 3</em></p><p>The Ravens might be the only team that gives the Eagles a run for their money in the talent department. Baltimore is the biggest threat to the top two, but can it finally overcome its postseason disappointments?</p><h3><a id="BUF" name="BUF">4. Buffalo Bills</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 4</em></p><p>Speaking of playoff letdowns, the Bills are hoping this is the year they finally get over the hump. This team will always be in the mix with Josh Allen leading the way, and reinforcements added on the defensive side could make the difference.</p><h3><a id="GB" name="GB">5. Detroit Lions</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 5</em></p><p>What will this Lions offense look like without Ben Johnson? There's bound to be some sort of negative impact, but perhaps preseason standout Isaac TeSlaa is yet another weapon who can help offset the loss.</p><h3><a id="MIN" name="MIN">7. Minnesota Vikings</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 6</em></p><p>It would've been nice to see J.J. McCarthy play more than one drive in the preseason, but we can only assume that means the Vikings think he's ready to take over as the starter. This team has everything it needs to contend if the second-year quarterback hits the ground running.</p><h3><a id="LAR" name="LAR">8. Los Angeles Rams</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 8</em></p><p>Matthew Stafford is on track for Week 1 after missing a significant portion of training camp due to a back injury. Assuming he can manage it throughout the year, the Rams figure to be one of the best teams in football.</p><h3><a id="WAS" name="WAS">9. Washington Commanders</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 10</em></p><p>The Commanders' schedule is a lot tougher this year, so building on last season's Cinderella run to the NFC title game won't be an easy task. Jayden Daniels gives them a chance, though, and getting Terry McLaurin's contract situation sorted out should keep the offense rolling.</p><h3><a id="TB" name="TB">10. Emeka Egbuka should have a major role from the jump alongside Mike Evans, as Chris Godwin still has no timeline to return and Jalen McMillan might not be back until the second half of the season.</p><h3><a id="DEN" name="DEN">11. Denver Broncos</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 12</em></p><p>The Broncos have a Super Bowl-caliber defense. Sean Payton's offense may be a sufficient complement anyway, but Bo Nix taking a step forward in Year 2 would put Denver in the mix sooner than anyone expected.</p><h3><a id="HOU" name="HOU">12. Houston Texans</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 13</em></p><p>The Texans' defense is one of the best in the game right now. If the change at offensive coordinator helps C.J. Stroud produce like he did as a rookie, Houston might have what it takes to challenge the top teams in the AFC.</p><h3><a id="LAC" name="LAC">13. Los Angeles Chargers</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 11</em></p><p>Rashawn Slater going down with a season-ending knee injury really hurts the outlook for the Chargers' offense. They'll be fine at left tackle, with Joe Alt sliding over, but the right tackle spot is now a glaring weakness.</p><h3><a id="SF" name="SF">14. San Francisco 49ers</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 14</em></p><p>The 49ers won't have much trouble scoring. But can Robert Saleh pick up the pieces on defense? Having the NFL's easiest schedule provides a pretty smooth path to the playoffs regardless.</p><h3><a id="CHI" name="CHI">15. Seattle Seahawks</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 18</em></p><p>If preseason reps are any indication, the Seahawks' run game should be a force under Klint Kubiak. And with Mike Macdonald having already built an upper-echelon defense, Seattle may surprise some people.</p><h3><a id="PIT" name="PIT">18. Pittsburgh Steelers</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 19</em></p><p>The Steelers' defense looks great as always. But does anyone really know what to expect from the Aaron Rodgers-led offense? Pittsburgh could still use another receiver opposite DK Metcalf.</p><h3><a id="DAL" name="DAL">19. Dallas Cowboys</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 17</em></p><p>Trading your best player a week before the opener is a mind-boggling move. It's tough to imagine this one working out well for Jerry Jones. The Cowboys' defense led the league in EPA/play when Micah Parsons was on the field over the last four years, according to TruMedia. In snaps without him, Dallas tumbled all the way to 32nd.</p><h3><a id="MIA" name="MIA">20. Arizona Cardinals</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 22</em></p><p>The Cardinals are quietly pretty solid on both sides of the ball. If Marvin Harrison Jr. has the breakout season many are expecting, Arizona could sneak up on other contenders in a crowded NFC playoff picture.</p><h3><a id="LV" name="LV">23. Las Vegas Raiders</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 23</em></p><p>The Raiders should put plenty of points on the board, with Geno Smith, Ashton Jeanty, and new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly each providing monumental upgrades at their respective positions. The defense is another story.</p><h3><a id="NE" name="NE">24. New England Patriots</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 24</em></p><p>After Mike Vrabel's first offseason in New England, the Patriots are quickly headed back in the right direction. It's probably not out of the question for them to make a playoff push, but next year seems more realistic.</p><h3><a id="JAX" name="JAX">25. Trevor Lawrence could be in for a bounce-back season working under Liam Coen, and Travis Hunter should immediately be one of the NFL's most exciting players. This rebuild may be a process, however, as the secondary is still in rough shape.</p><h3><a id="IND" name="IND">26. Indianapolis Colts</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 26</em></p><p>Daniel Jones seemingly won't have a short leash as the starting quarterback in Indy. Not trusting Anthony Richardson is one thing, but expecting Jones to provide stability feels deeply unserious. Is the low ceiling he provides really worth throwing in the towel on Richardson's development?</p><h3><a id="NYG" name="NYG">27. New York Giants</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 29</em></p><p>Jaxson Dart's preseason performance gives Giants fans some hope for the future. Even if Dart doesn't see the field much as a rookie, this team is trending toward fun territory for the first time in a while. New York's stacked defensive front, headlined by No. 3 overall pick Abdul Carter, looked unblockable in the preseason.</p><h3><a id="CAR" name="CAR">28. Carolina Panthers</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 27</em></p><p>The Panthers trading away Adam Thielen, only to lose Jalen Coker for the first month of the season days later, is a big hit to Bryce Young's receiving corps. First-round rookie Tetairoa McMillan will do a lot of the heavy lifting right away.</p><h3><a id="NYJ" name="NYJ">29. New York Jets</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 28</em></p><p>The Jets' run game should be interesting to watch, but the passing attack needs to be at least a serviceable complement for success to follow. Justin Fields' preseason was a reminder that there are no guarantees on that front.</p><h3><a id="TEN" name="TEN">30. But questions elsewhere on the offense - and across the roster as a whole - could delay a major improvement in the win column.</p><h3><a id="NO" name="NO">31. New Orleans Saints</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 31</em></p><p>Although Spencer Rattler beat out second-round rookie Tyler Shough for the starting job, this quarterback battle is far from over. Both should see plenty of playing time for an offense that could be looking for a spark on a regular basis.</p><h3><a id="CLE" name="CLE">32. Cleveland Browns</a></h3><p><em>Preseason rank: 32</em></p><p>It's probably going to be a long year in Cleveland, but the Browns have some really interesting rookies to keep an eye on. Mason Graham, Carson Schwesinger, and Harold Fannin Jr. all flashed in the preseason, and the Kenny Pickett trade leaves Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders as the backups to Joe Flacco.</p><p><em>Dan Wilkins is theScore's senior NFL writer.</em></p>

<p>Jerry Jones has truly outdone himself this time.</p><p>The Dallas Cowboys owner sent shockwaves through the football world Thursday when he put an end to the Micah Parsons standoff by sending the superstar pass-rusher to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for two first-round picks and veteran defensive tackle Kenny Clark.</p><p>It's one of the most stunning (and unnecessary) NFL trades we've ever seen. Let's break it down from both sides.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><h3>Cowboys</h3><p>Just when you thought Jones couldn't possibly be any worse at his job, he reaches back for a little something extra. You really have to feel for Cowboys fans at this point.</p><p>Keeping Parsons in Dallas shouldn't have been a complicated endeavor. He wanted to be there, and he's been willing to sign for well over a year. There was even a point where he said he didn't need to top $40 million per season. A fair and timely deal was seemingly all it would've taken to secure Parsons' future with the team that drafted him.</p><p>Even when things devolved to the point of him publicly requesting a trade, it turns out there was still an opportunity to find a solution. Parsons revealed to <a href="https://x.com/SlaterNFL/status/1961200612080521461">NFL Network's Jane Slater</a> that he and his agent went back to the Cowboys to discuss an extension. At that point, he says, the team told him to either play out the final year of his rookie deal or leave.</p><p>As always, Jones insists on doing things his way. In the past, dragging out negotiations with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb only cost him money. The cap ramifications were incredibly damaging to the team's roster-building efforts, but at least he eventually got the stars signed. This time, he's taken the incompetence to new heights and chased away one of the best players in football.</p><p>It seemed inevitable that the Cowboys would attempt to sell this move as some sort of big win for the organization. Sure enough, Jones rambled for 10 minutes after the first question he fielded at a post-trade press conference Thursday, talking about how Dallas needs to stop the run and hypothesizing that the draft picks could turn into Pro Bowl players.</p><p>Anything is possible, but what are the odds that two late first-round picks and a veteran defensive tackle ever come close to matching the value of a 26-year-old superstar who has the ability to single-handedly elevate an entire defense?</p><p>To wit: The Cowboys' defense posted a league-best 0.08 EPA/play over the last four years with Parsons on the field, according to TruMedia. That number drops all the way to -0.05 in snaps without him, good for last in the NFL. A quick look at <a href="https://www.ourlads.com/nfldepthcharts/depthchart/DAL">their depth chart</a> drives home the case laid out by the numbers: This defense is certifiably cooked without Parsons.</p><p>There is simply no world in which the Cowboys didn't understand this. Most teams can only dream of having a player like Parsons in his prime. Extending him at whatever price the market demanded should have been the layup of all layups. Instead, the owner opted for his own version of the Luka Doncic deal.</p><p>Jones seems to enjoy the fact that the Cowboys are always in the news. He sees it as good for business. But is that really a positive when the reason is your team becoming a laughing stock? At some point winning - which is also good for business - has to become the priority.</p><p><strong>Grade: F</strong></p><h3>Packers</h3><p>A new Super Bowl contender has officially entered the chat.</p><p>The Packers had previously been lingering on the periphery, with questions about the defense keeping them a clear step below a tier of front-runners in the Eagles, Chiefs, Ravens, and Bills. This is the type of move that can make it a group of five.</p><p>Parsons is the most explosive pass-rusher in the game. He's posted no fewer than 12 sacks in each of the four seasons since being drafted in 2021, and he leads all edge defenders in pressures (330) and pressure rate (20.3%) over that stretch, according to PFF.</p><p>That constant and unparalleled disruption lifted up an otherwise mediocre Cowboys defense over the last four years. It's easy to dream on the possibilities that come with adding that kind of talent to a Packers defense that quietly finished the 2024 campaign tied for fourth in EPA/play. Factor in the playmakers and coaching chops that make the Packers so dangerous on the other side of the ball, and we may now be looking at one of the NFL's most complete teams.</p><p>The other interesting part of this trade is just how much of a departure it is from the way Green Bay usually does business. The Parsons blockbuster marks the first time the Packers have traded away a first-round pick since they acquired Brett Favre back in 1992. This front office has also long maintained a conservative approach to non-quarterback contracts, typically avoiding any sort of guarantees beyond the first year. Parsons' extension breaks all the club norms on that front, too.</p><p>His reported four-year, $188-million deal blows away the non-quarterback market at $47 million per season and includes $136 million guaranteed. For reference, Jordan Love got $160.3 million in guarantees when he signed his four-year, $220-million extension last summer.</p><p>Perhaps there's a lesson to be learned for the Cowboys here. The Packers have a way of doing business, and they almost always stick to it. Crucially, though, they're willing to make exceptions for special cases. Parsons fits that description.</p><p>A willingness to be bold is exactly what fans should be demanding of their teams when they have a chance to win. The Packers, a clear-cut contender who just so happen to have the league's youngest roster, picked the perfect time to go all-in.</p><p>There's a real chance that they have another Lombardi Trophy to show for it sooner than later.</p><p><strong>Grade: A+</strong></p><p><em>Dan Wilkins is theScore's senior NFL writer.</em></p>

</script></figure><p>This tier probably doesn't require much explaining. Nobody is going to be surprised if the 2025 season produces an immediate Super Bowl rematch. The Eagles and Chiefs were similarly outstanding in making their way to football's biggest stage last season, and the argument can be made that both will be even better in the year ahead.</p><p>Among those who could reasonably pose a threat to the top two, the Ravens and Bills are clearly in a class of their own. Baltimore's improved defensive backfield may well make this the only roster in football that rivals the collection of talent in Philly. Lamar Jackson, a two-time NFL MVP, is somehow still getting better with every passing year. The same can be said about Josh Allen, who's coming off his first career MVP award. </script></figure><p>This group has its share of questions marks. For one reason or another, these teams should all be considered a clear step below those in the top tier. But each still has what it takes to go on a Super Bowl run if everything breaks right.</p><p>For the Lions, that means avoiding any sort of schematic setbacks after losing rising stars at both offensive and defensive coordinator. The talent is there otherwise. The Packers' offense figures to take another step forward, but can the defense repeat last year's surprise effort without adding a game-changer up front or at corner?</p><p>J.J. McCarthy has been afforded the perfect opportunity to hit the ground running at the professional level, as the Vikings made significant improvements to a roster that won 14 games last year. This team may not miss a beat if the de facto rookie quarterback can avoid any major growing pains out of the gate. The Rams are one of the best-coached teams in football, and the Davante Adams addition has the potential to put this roster over the top. But Matthew Stafford's lingering back injury is a real concern. His availability likely makes or breaks their season.</p><p>And then there's the Texans. Houston might be a surprising member of the second tier, considering the disappointment of last season, but it's a new year. Incoming offensive coordinator Nick Caley should be a major upgrade over Bobby Slowik, potentially putting C.J. Stroud back on the superstar path he established with an incredible rookie season. Anything in the range of a top-10 offense would be a dangerous complement to the elite unit DeMeco Ryans has built on the other side of the ball.</p><h3>Outside chance</h3><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="Outside chance" aria-label="Table" id="datawrapper-chart-CA0Nf" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/CA0Nf/1/" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;" height="178" data-external="1"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">!function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("iframe");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data["datawrapper-height"][t]+"px";r.style.height=d}}})}();
</script></figure><p>Maybe the Commanders deserve to be a tier above. Some might argue for even more after last year's unexpected run to the NFC title game. But are we sure this defense has done enough to improve? The NFL's oldest roster taking on a much more difficult schedule opens the door for Washington to disappoint anyone still hung up on last year's magical run.</p><p>Sean Payton seems to be building something special in Denver. The defense alone should have this team comfortably in the playoffs. The question is whether Bo Nix can build on a promising first year. The 49ers will always score points with Kyle Shanahan running the offense, and Robert Saleh's return should raise the floor on defense, but an offseason cap reset has this team facing too many questions.</p><p>While the Bucs may have an offense capable of hanging with the best, the pass defense has been one of the NFL's worst for two years running. </script></figure><p>Last season's playoff appearance was a great start to the Jim Harbaugh era in Los Angeles. The Chargers are probably still another year away from having the defensive talent to maximize Jesse Minter's scheme. The Bears should quickly start heading in the right direction under Ben Johnson before potentially emerging as a legitimate contender in 2026.</p><p>The Steelers have been in the playoffs each of the last two years despite bad quarterback play. Aaron Rodgers should make the path back a little less bumpy, but it's tough to imagine the 41-year-old taking Pittsburgh much further. The Bengals could be a Super Bowl contender if they had even a league-average defense to go with their star-studded offense. Unfortunately, that's simply not the case.</p><p>Don't sleep on the Seahawks as a playoff contender this season. Mike Macdonald has quickly constructed one of the best defenses in football. If preseason reps are any indication, the arrival of new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak might give Seattle a suitable complement in the form of a consistent run game.</p><h3>Bubble teams</h3><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="Bubble teams" aria-label="Table" id="datawrapper-chart-SDyUY" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/SDyUY/1/" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;" height="236" data-external="1"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">!function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("iframe");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data["datawrapper-height"][t]+"px";r.style.height=d}}})}();
</script></figure><p>The Cowboys are better than the constant drama might suggest. A playoff appearance is a real possibility, even if the defense does limit the potential for anything more. The Dolphins are in a similar situation, though it feels like this thing could fall apart in a hurry. The floor might be quite a bit lower than people think.</p><p>Atlanta is still looking for its first winning season since 2017. Michael Penix Jr. living up to his draft status in his first full year as a starter would go a long way toward making that a reality. The Cardinals are on the rise after a quietly encouraging 2024 season on both sides of the ball, but they'll have to take another big step forward in the tough NFC West.</p><p>The Raiders might have a playoff-caliber offense with Geno Smith and Ashton Jeanty added to the mix. Pete Carroll will need to work some magic if the defense is going to hold up its end of the bargain. The Patriots are probably still a year away, but this team will at least be a tough out. </script></figure><p>The Jaguars and Panthers are trending up. Give these young teams another year to build and we could be talking about a pair of emerging playoff contenders. The Colts and Jets would be knocking on that door this year if they didn't have such uninspiring quarterback situations. As things stand in that regard, it's tough to have any real expectations.</p><p>There's a case to be made that this Giants team is underrated. A lethal pass-rush could make the defense a real force, and Russell Wilson will at least allow for more of a vertical passing game than was ever possible with Daniel Jones. The NFL's hardest schedule won't be doing them any favors though.</p><p>Cam Ward could be the franchise quarterback the Titans have been seeking. This roster still has a long way to go, so wins may be tough to come by in the short term. But that's not the important part this year. The Browns are in a similar position, still recovering from the all-time blunder that was the Deshaun Watson trade.</p><p>The silver lining is that next year's quarterback class should have much more to offer than the group that was available this past spring. <p><em>Key takeaways, fantasy football thoughts, and everything else you need to know from the NFL preseason games.</em></p><h3>Saturday games</h3><p><strong>Rough day for Shedeur</strong></p><p>Shedeur Sanders' second preseason appearance didn't go quite as well as his first. In fact, Saturday's performance makes it pretty clear why he hasn't been in the mix to compete for the starting job coming out of camp. That's not to say there isn't potential here. There absolutely is. And the Browns should be happy to have him as a developmental player for the future. Personally, I like his long-term upside quite a bit more than third-round pick Dillon Gabriel. But plays like we saw early in the fourth quarter, where Sanders <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Nzqi9xeBqg">bailed out the back door of the pocket</a> and continued to draft backward before taking a 24-yard sack, are not going to fly at this level. He's got a long way to go.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p><strong>Gordon earning a role</strong></p><p>Miami's issues in the physicality department start up front. That problem isn't truly going away until the offensive line can figure things out. It can't hurt to finally have a power back in the rotation, though. Ollie Gordon fits that description better than any other Dolphins runner to this point in the Mike McDaniel era, and he's well on his way to earning a role in this backfield. The sixth-round rookie has completely outperformed fellow backup Jaylen Wright throughout the preseason. Another efficient outing this week sees him finish the preseason with 26 carries for 126 yards (4.8 ypc). Wright, a fourth-round pick in last year's draft, managed just 19 yards on 13 carries.</p><p>De'Von Achane is the clear feature back when he returns from his calf injury, but the Dolphins could use a spark in short yardage. That role has Gordon's name written all over it. And in the event Achane is ever forced to miss time in the regular season, everything we've seen this summer suggests he should be the first man up to take on more volume. Currently being drafted as the RB60 and 218th player overall, Gordon could easily end up as one of the best values in fantasy this year.</p><p><strong>No answers for Broncos RBs</strong></p><p>Anyone hoping for the preseason to provide some clarity on the Broncos' backfield rotation is probably a little disappointed. R.J. Harvey has been the lead back throughout, but is that because J.K. Dobbins was held out for each of the last two games? Harvey will have a significant role either way, and it might grow as the season persists. But the Broncos didn't sign Dobbins for nothing. His pass protection skills, in particular, could limit Harvey's opportunities on third down. And Sean Payton isn't one to hesitate to lean on a veteran while making a younger player earn his role. With all of that in mind, I think I'd rather pass on drafting Harvey as the RB22 this year. The upside is undeniable in this offense, but there might be safer ways to use an early fifth-round pick. Dobbins could prove to be a great value in the 10th.</p><p><strong>Fannin worth watching</strong></p><p>The 2025 outlook for the Browns' offense is pretty bleak. There are at least a few young players worth keeping an eye on, though, and Harold Fannin Jr. is at the top of my list. The former Bowling Green star, who I had ranked as the No. 3 tight end in this class, was a fascinating draft prospect. While the presence of David Njoku had seemingly made Cleveland a less-than-ideal landing spot, it seems like the Browns could end up playing a lot of two tight-end sets. We saw a taste of that in a brief appearance from the starting offense Saturday. Fannin caught a 15-yard touchdown from Joe Flacco on a post route split out wide to the right, and he was also on the receiving end of a tight end screen designed to leverage his unique run-after-catch skills. Making things even more interesting for his standing in the offense, Fannin was done for the day when the starters were pulled after three drives. The Browns could have big plans for their talented tight end in Year 1.</p><p><strong>Make it 3 for TeSlaa</strong></p><p>Isaac TeSlaa might be the story of the entire preseason. The Lions' rookie receiver was at it again this week, capping off the exhibition slate with a touchdown catch for the third straight game. This time, he beat his man off the line and hauled in a deep ball for a 33-yard score. TeSlaa will have an uphill climb to any sort of consistent Year 1 production, but that's more about the amount of playmakers in Detroit than it is his ability. The third-round pick has a unique combination of athleticism and contested-catch skills. He should be pushing for the WR3 job alongside Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams at some point this season.</p><p><strong>Flip a coin</strong></p><p>Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough both got plenty of work in the Saints' preseason finale, and my takeaway is the exact same as it was last week: take your pick. Rattler starting the first and third game would appear to suggest he's considered the favorite. And with Shough having done nothing to separate himself, Rattler may keep the job to start the season. It won't be permanent, though. This seems like a situation where we could see multiple QB changes throughout the year. Not ideal for a team's chances of competing, but that was never a realistic expectation here anyway. It probably can't hurt to get an extended look at each of these young quarterbacks.</p><p><strong>Pierce &gt; Marks?</strong></p><p>I've been keeping tabs on Dameon Pierce as a potential fantasy sleeper in Houston. Nick Chubb is the clear starter with Joe Mixon out indefinitely, but it remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old can return to form after a gruesome 2023 knee injury. And while rookie Woody Marks probably has the most upside of the group, there are no guarantees he'll get the opportunity. Pierce was the lead back with Chubb and other starters held out of Saturday's preseason contest. Marks mixed in for early passing situations before getting his chance to operate in an every-down capacity later on.</p><p>Marks was the more productive of the two, but I'm less concerned with these small-sample results than I am with the way the staff envisions this group taking shape. At this point, I think that Pierce is seen as the clear No. 2 behind Chubb. And considering the success he enjoyed before Houston transitioned to a zone-heavy run game, it's possible that a return to gap concepts could help him recapture the form we saw back in 2022.</p><p><strong>JCM sits, C-Rod plays</strong></p><p>Jacory Croskey-Merritt joined the Commanders' starters in sitting out the preseason finale Saturday. That may seem like a positive sign for his standing in the competition for early-down work, along with Chris Rodriguez suiting up to play with backups. But it's important to note that Croskey-Merritt has been dealing with a shoulder injury. He was in a non-contact jersey at practice late this week.</p><p>Rodriguez got the start when both were healthy for last week's preseason game. A 40-yard run was the highlight of his six-carry, 62-yard effort, and he added another 34 yards on five attempts this week. I still like Croskey-Merritt to step into the high-volume role that became available after the Brian Robinson trade, and I think his combination of explosiveness and lateral agility can be a big addition to this offense. But with Rodriguez lingering and Austin Ekeler leading the way in the pass game, there's a chance that this becomes the kind of committee that caps the fantasy upside for all. And considering Croskey-Merritt's price has been rising faster than any player league wide, the opportunity to get him at a decent value might be long gone.</p><h3>Friday games</h3><p><strong>Chiefs getting vertical again?</strong></p><p>The Chiefs' offense has been a frustrating watch for two years running. That feels pretty weird to say considering each of those seasons ended with a Super Bowl appearance - one being a win - but it's true. The passing game has progressively trended further and further away from the high-powered attack we saw in the early stages of the Patrick Mahomes era. Consistent issues at receiver were the main issue on this front. While Mahomes evolving into a masterful quick-game facilitator helped compensate for those limitations, he wasn't totally blameless, either. The Chiefs are prioritizing improvements in that area in 2025, and they may well be on their way.</p><p>Mahomes connecting with speedy free-agent addition Tyquan Thornton for a 58-yard play was the highlight of Friday's preseason finale against the Bears. We know Marquise Brown can provide a similar element when he's healthy, and Xavier Worthy is the fastest player in combine history. The second-year wideout should get more opportunities to stretch the field this year. If Mahomes can do his part and recapture that downfield magic to complement the rest of his Hall of Fame skill set, he's probably being undervalued as this year's QB6 in fantasy. You can say the same about any MVP odds that don't have him as the front-runner.</p><p><strong>Brashard Smith = Jerick McKinnon</strong></p><p>Brashard Smith seeing work with the first-team offense on Kansas City's opening drive should have your attention. Not only was the seventh-round rookie out there in passing situations, but K.C. made a clear effort to get him involved. Mahomes just missed hitting Smith up the seam on second-and-10 from the Bears' 34-yard line. He came right back to him on a Texas route out of the backfield three plays later, connecting for a 12-yard gain that put the Chiefs on the 3-yard line.</p><p>Smith, who was a receiver at Miami before transitioning to running back at SMU, was the best pass-catching back in this year's draft. In making the case for him as a fantasy football sleeper this year, I've compared his potential role to that of former Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon. While McKinnon was never a featured back, he saw enough volume in the passing game to put up RB2 production in 2022. Smith has that kind of upside even with Isiah Pacheco locked into his role as the lead ball-carrier.</p><p><strong>Odunze primed for big year</strong></p><p>The Bears' offense wasn't quite as sharp Friday night as it was in last week's showing against the Bills' backups. That may have something to do with going up against the Chiefs' first-team defense this time around, but let's not spend too much time jumping on and off the optimism bandwagon. The arrow is firmly pointed up in Chicago. My big takeaway from the preseason finale is that Rome Odunze could be in for a monster season.</p><p>The second-year wideout played the entire first half along with the rest of the offensive starters and turned a team-high five targets into three catches for 45 yards and one touchdown. The stat line could have been even more impressive if he'd been able to haul in his contested deep ball down the sideline. I'm expecting Odunze to take a big leap in Year 2, surpassing D.J. Moore to emerge as Caleb Williams' No. 1 target. Considering he's currently being drafted 32 spots behind Moore, last year's No. 9 overall pick could be quite the steal in your fantasy leagues.</p><p><strong>Ward highlights on the way</strong></p><p>Cam Ward got plenty of run in his first preseason. The statistical output wasn't spectacular by any stretch, but that's not the important part. It was incredibly easy to see why the former Miami star became a lock for the Titans at the top of the draft. There will likely be plenty of ups and downs throughout his rookie campaign, but I have a feeling this season is going to inspire a lot of hope in Tennessee no matter the final record. Ward's unique combination of arm talent, creativity, and aggressiveness should produce plenty of highlight-reel throws right out of the gate. With some patience, he may well emerge as the franchise-caliber quarterback this team desperately needs.</p><p><strong>McCarthy gets limited preseason reps</strong></p><p>Every team has a different philosophy when it comes to preseason. Some, like the Chiefs, see these reps as a crucial part of the preparation process. That's why Mahomes was on the field for three possessions Friday night. Others lean toward keeping their starters out of harm's way above all else, no matter the experience level. The Vikings evidently fall into the latter category. J.J. McCarthy was held out of this week's game, meaning he finishes the preseason having thrown just seven passes. All of which came in his lone drive at the start of Minnesota's opener against Houston. The Vikings are probably content with what they've seen in training camp and joint practices, but a slow start would certainly raise some questions as to whether the young quarterback could have used more reps coming off a lost rookie season.</p><p><strong>Javonte's job in Dallas</strong></p><p>It's been trending in this direction for a while now, but this week appears to have provided the confirmation that Javonte Williams is the lead back in Dallas. The former second-round pick, who signed a one-year $3-million deal with the Cowboys this offseason, joined the rest of the starters in sitting out Friday's preseason finale against the Falcons. Rookies Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah have been generating buzz of late, but it seems possible that neither is within striking distance on the depth chart.</p><p>Blue, who made a tackle as part of the opening kickoff team, was working behind Deuce Vaughn at running back before eventually exiting with an ankle injury. Mafah got his chance later and was still in the game on the Cowboys' final drive. The uninspiring backfield should probably have Dallas in the market for a trade. We know better than to expect any sort of aggressive move from this team, though. But hey, maybe Williams surprises us with a bounce-back season another year removed from a tough knee injury. He's the Cowboys running back to target in fantasy until one of the young guys can work their way up.</p><h3>Thursday games</h3><p><strong>Dart does it again</strong></p><p>The Jaxson Dart hype train continues to pick up steam. Another impressive showing in the Giants' final game of the preseason suddenly has the football world wondering just how much runway Russell Wilson will have as the starter. But I'm less convinced that Dart is actually a threat to the veteran's job at any point early this season. For starters, the transition to the NFL could prove challenging against first-team defenses that are gearing up to stop him. It's also easy to believe that the Giants simply like the idea of Wilson at quarterback for a year. One-dimensional as he may be, his ability to push the ball downfield unlocks plenty of possibilities for a coaching staff that has long suffered through some horrific quarterback play.</p><p>That said, even the biggest Dart doubters would have a hard time downplaying the flashes he's shown throughout August. He looks far more comfortable than I would've expected this early in his development process. Even if there's still a long way to go, the playmaking traits showing up so consistently right out of the gate can only be taken as a promising sign for the future. And for those hoping to see him on the field as a rookie, his encouraging preseason could alter any plans this staff may have had for a redshirt year. Putting Dart on the field probably becomes a real possibility if and when the Giants are effectively out of the race. And considering their brutal schedule this year, Dart could get plenty of in-game learning opportunities down the stretch.</p><p><strong>Kaleb overvalued?</strong></p><p>I've always loved Kaleb Johnson's fit in this Steelers offense. The Iowa product was only my seventh-ranked running back in the 2025 class, but landing in a run-heavy, outside-zone scheme was enough for me to make him my post-draft Offensive Rookie of the Year pick. Now, I'm not so sure he'll come close to that ceiling in Year 1.</p><p>Johnson did just fine in Thursday's preseason finale, taking his five carries for 24 yards (4.8 yards per carry). It was easy to see how he might put up big numbers with enough volume, but his opportunities came after both Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell finished up their brief appearances with other active starters. Considering Mike Tomlin's affinity for veteran players and his resistance to forcing rookies into the lineup too early, Johnson may have to sit back and wait. He'll probably work his way up the depth chart at some point, but will that be soon enough to justify his early seventh-round ADP, which currently puts him eight spots ahead of Warren? Maybe not. This might be the latest rookie getting overvalued in fantasy drafts.</p><p><strong>Harmon avoids major injury</strong></p><p>Pittsburgh's defense got a scare Thursday night when Derrick Harmon was carted off the field. Head coach Mike Tomlin revealed after halftime that the first-round rookie defensive tackle is dealing with a knee sprain. Harmon's injury isn't season-ending, but he's expected to miss at least a few weeks, according to <a href="https://x.com/gerrydulac/status/1958717075104399515">Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette</a>. The Oregon product is a powerful interior lineman who, along with his potential impact as a pass-rusher, figures to be the X-factor in Pittsburgh's quest to improve a leaky run defense. Any sort of lengthy absence would leave the front seven relying on the same group that struggled at times last year.</p>

Nobody could reasonably argue otherwise after he ran for 1,144 yards with 15 total touchdowns in 2023 before then turning things up a notch with 1,299 rushing yards and 16 scores in 2024. But the risk involved in this pick, as is the case for so many other fantasy-related questions, isn't about talent.</p><p>The Rams once again added to the backfield in this year's draft, landing Jarquez Hunter in the fourth round. Scoff at the draft capital if you will, but it hasn't been difficult to gather that Sean McVay was head over heels for the Auburn product. Might he see Hunter's big-play ability as something of a missing piece for this run game?</p><p>Factor in that the Rams also have 2024 second-rounder Blake Corum in the mix, and it seems entirely possible that this backfield looks a lot different than the one-man show that produced 350 touches for Williams last year. He'll remain the lead guy going forward, but Hunter and Corum cutting into his workload might make it tough to see the return value you're expecting from a running back with a 27th overall ADP, according to FantasyPros.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="Breece Hall" aria-label="Table" id="datawrapper-chart-ZBc0y" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/ZBc0y/1/" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;" height="99" data-external="1"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">!function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("iframe");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data["datawrapper-height"][t]+"px";r.style.height=d}}})}();

Given the opportunity for a feature workload behind this new-look offensive line, he'd be one of the most exciting breakout candidates in the league this year. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like he'll be in anything close to that sort of role.</p><p>The Jets appear dedicated to a committee approach to their run game. Hall will remain a big part of that, and presumably be the de facto lead back on the depth chart, but there will be plenty of competition for carries. Braelon Allen is the biggest threat to his fantasy upside, as the second-year back rotated in for both short-yardage and passing-game work in the preseason. Isaiah Davis also looms as a potential rotation ball-carrier, and Justin Fields will handle plenty of run-game volume on his own.</p><p>That's a lot of obstacles to consistent fantasy production for a player who's currently being drafted as the RB14. Hill has been one of the league's most unstoppable players for the majority of his pro career. While his production dipped in 2024, he was also playing through a wrist injury that required surgery at season's end.</p><p>It's entirely possible that a healthy Hill immediately recaptures his previous level of play and actually outperforms his third-round ADP. It'll certainly be tempting to scoop him up so much later than was possible at any point over the last few years. I'm probably going to let someone else be the one to take that gamble, though.</p><p>Even with the wrist injury, the timing of the down year raises too many alarm bells to be overly confident about his prospects in his age-31 season. It was only a matter of time before he lost a step. As a player who has won with an unparalleled combination of speed and quickness, it was always hard to imagine Hill's game aging particularly gracefully. With one look at the Jets' receiver depth chart, it would be pretty easy to make yourself believe in the fourth-year wideout putting together a monster season. There is literally zero competition for targets in that room.</p><p>So why might Wilson be a fantasy bust this year? For starters, the lack of receiver talent elsewhere on the roster could very well work against him. Taking Wilson away will be the top priority of every opponent's coverage scheme.</p><p>And while he certainly has the talent to overcome the extra attention, are we sure this passing game will put him in a position to succeed? The preseason hasn't exactly quieted concerns on that front. As much as I like Fields for fantasy purposes, I'm almost exclusively chasing the rushing upside there. There are still some big questions about the rest of his game. The Jets are going to run the ball as much as anyone this year. And it's not like you're passing up elite talents to get him in the seventh round of your drafts. But the market correction has still been a little slow for my liking.</p><p>While the Chiefs legend has mastered the art of just leaving enough gas in the tank for some more postseason magic, the regular-season output that matters to fantasy managers is bottoming out in a hurry. Kelce remained a target machine in 2024, but he did staggeringly little with the opportunity. His 823 yards represents the lowest total from any tight end to receive 130-plus targets since at least 1992.</p><p>Kelce remained a high-volume player, in part, because of a lack of options elsewhere in the Chiefs receiving corps. But with a young receiving corps trending up, Kelce's opportunities could drop substantially this year. It's tough to wrap your mind around it, but he's probably still overpriced. Reaching to fill your tight end spot with a familiar name, rather than waiting another three-plus rounds to take an ascending tight end like Tucker Kraft, could prove costly.</p><p><strong>More from this series:</strong></p><ul>

<p><em>Key takeaways, fantasy football thoughts, and everything else you need to know from the NFL preseason games.</em></p><h3>Sunday games</h3><p><strong>New era in Chicago</strong></p><p>Bears fans have to be feeling pretty good right now. It's been a difficult few years in Chicago. Matt Eberflus' staff wasting the first season of the Caleb Williams era was probably the most deflating of the bunch. And while it was probably concerning to see camp reports of the second-year quarterback struggling with the transition to a new offense, Ben Johnson coaching him up was always going to be a bit of a process. Sure enough, things seems to have started to click just in time for his preseason debut.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Williams looked more comfortable in his his brief appearance Saturday than at any point during his rough rookie season. He opened the game by orchestrating a near-flawless 92-yard touchdown drive, capped with a 36-yard score to Olamide Zaccheaus. Williams was getting the ball out in rhythm, making good decisions, and even flashing his arm with a seed up the seam to Cole Kmet. First-round tight end Colston Loveland was involved early and often, and Luther Burden III made his share of plays later on. I'm still holding out hope that the Bears will find a way to round out the new-look group by trading for a starting-caliber running back, but we'll see. Either way, this offense is going to be night and day from the product we saw last year. That kind of growth, along with a Dennis Allen-led defense, could make this team a playoff contender right away.</p><p><strong>Jaguars rotate RBs</strong></p><p>Travis Etienne ran exclusively with the starters in last week's preseason opener, briefly calling into question all the camp buzz about Tank Bigsby. When the Jaguars leaned into more situational rotations this week against the Saints, the result was more of what we'd been expecting. But this still seems like a backfield that'll be tough to figure out for fantasy purposes.</p><p>Bigsby was the lead back on the first drive, taking two carries for six yards and turning a screen pass into a 19-yard gain. Etienne checked in for passing situations before getting his chance to lead the way on the following possession, where he turned three carries into 24 yards and added one catch for 8. Further complicating matters, it's probably only a matter of time before Bhayshul Tuten starts earning more of a role. If you expect an uptick in scoring under Liam Coen, though, Bigsby earning early-down volume and goal-line opportunities could separate him from the rest of the group. He's a potential value at the RB40, eight spots behind Etienne.</p><p><strong>Lawrence looking sharp</strong></p><p>Trevor Lawrence seems to be trending in the right direction again. We'll have to take Sunday's performance with a grain of salt - the Saints were sitting defensive starters, after all - but it was the second time in as many weeks that the Jaguars quarterback looked comfortable and confident at the helm of this new-look offense. That's probably more than we can say about his game for much of the last two years. He completed eight of 10 passes for 76 yards in the brief appearance, capping his second and final drive with a short touchdown to Parker Washington. I still see Lawrence as an immensely talented passer who could finally begin to realize his potential with help from a competent offensive system.</p><p><strong>Who wants it more?</strong></p><p>The Saints hope one of their young quarterbacks will decide this competition for them. Unless there's been some sort of clear separation in practice, the wait continues. Sunday's game against the Jaguars provided no clear answers. Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler have traded roles over the first two preseason games. Both fared better in opportunities with the second-team offense than they did in their starts, but each otherwise productive relief appearance also included a pick-6. I'd probably lean toward starting Shough, but that's pretty much only because I think the Saints will want a complete picture of the rookie's NFL potential before next year's draft. The way this roster is shaping up, quarterback position included, New Orleans could be picking quite early.</p><h3>Saturday games</h3><p><strong>Dart one-ups debut</strong></p><p>Make that two impressive preseason performances for Jaxson Dart. Saturday's game against the Jets produced even better results than last week's debut, with the first-round rookie finishing the night 14 of 16 for 137 yards, one touchdown, and another score on the ground. Are the Giants going out of their way to make things easy on their young quarterback? Of course they are. This week was a lot of quick-hitters underneath, with Dart averaging just 4.1 air yards per attempt. But that's exactly what this staff should be doing. They're in the process of helping their young quarterback acclimate his game to the NFL after playing in a gimmicky offense at Ole Miss. More than any sort of statistical output, the important takeaway here is that Dart looks comfortable. It's been a really encouraging start for a player who I foresaw facing a long, difficult transition. The future could be bright for the Giants.</p><p><strong>Dobbins sits, Harvey plays</strong></p><p>The Broncos opted to sit a few key starters for this week's game against the Cardinals. J.K. Dobbins was among those who didn't dress, while RJ Harvey suited up and got some work in with the first-team offense. We probably can't read too much into this one, as it makes perfect sense to have a veteran running back sit out preseason action whether he's a starter or not. It's also wise to get first-year players some live reps before the games really start to matter.</p><p>But considering the amount of fantasy buzz Harvey has received since landing with the Broncos, this one is worth monitoring. The second-round rookie being drafted as the RB21 might make sense if Dobbins is only taking on third-down and rotational duties. A backfield split giving him anything more significant, including regular goal-line work, could make Harvey's price a little rich. Dobbins, currently the RB37, might be the better value.</p><p><strong>Jets splitting backfield duties</strong></p><p>Everyone knows the Jets are going to run the ball in 2025. That should make this offense a particularly interesting unit for fantasy purposes. But it could be a bit of a frustrating one in that regard, too. Because while many will be hoping for some sort of bell cow they can count on for regular production, that's probably not going to happen. Aaron Glenn has been consistent about this being a backfield by committee.</p><p>We got more evidence of that Saturday, when Breece Hall and Braelon Allen both saw significant work with the first-team offense. Hall is probably still the favorite to take on the most volume, but Allen consistently rotating in for short-yardage situations - as he did against the Giants - could take away a good chunk of the scoring opportunities. Isaiah Davis will likely get involved when he's healthy, too. Hall, currently being drafted as the RB13, is probably more expensive than he should be. Allen might be one of the best values in fantasy at RB52.</p><p><strong>Chargers deep at WR</strong></p><p>It had been a bit of a quiet preseason for Tre Harris, with the second-round rookie unable to generate much hype to this point. Then came Saturday's game against the Rams. The Ole Miss product enjoyed a bit of a breakthrough performance with six catches for 85 yards, including a spectacular grab for a 34-yard gain down the sideline in the second half. And he's not the only one set to give the Chargers a much-needed boost at receiver.</p><p>Interestingly, it was fifth-round rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith who drew in alongside Ladd McConkey and Keenan Allen after Quentin Johnston was forced to leave in the first quarter. Sure enough, he added to his impressive summer with two more big plays of 37 and 29 yards. While my initial reaction was to wonder whether the early opportunity meant Lambert-Smith had surpassed Harris in the competition for WR4 duties, and perhaps the eventual opportunity to challenge Johnston, I'm not sure it really matters right now. The important thing is that the Chargers, after years of issues at receiver, may finally be on their way to finding long-term answers. Role and depth chart placings can be worked out later. The talent of this new-look group has the offense looking up.</p><p><strong>Are the Raiders fun again?</strong></p><p>I still have no idea what to think of the Las Vegas defense. It could be real bad. From an entertainment perspective, though, it may mean more opportunities to enjoy what the Raiders are building on the other side of the ball. Saturday's game against the 49ers offered a great snapshot of the unit's firepower. Two drives with the starters were enough to give us Brock Bowers mossing a safety down the sideline, Ashton Jeanty trucking a defender, Michael Mayer making a diving catch in traffic, and Geno Smith aggressively taking deep shots to Dont'e Thornton Jr. - a supremely gifted rookie who has 4.3 speed to go with his 6-foot-5 frame. Tre Tucker also provides plenty of speed, and Jakobi Meyers might be the most underrated receiver in football. It's an exciting group of weapons. And with Chip Kelly drawing up the plays, this offense could put a lot of points on the board.</p><p><strong>Gabriel gets his chance</strong></p><p>Dillon Gabriel played a lot better than I expected in his preseason debut. He was decently accurate, comfortable in the pocket, and consistently got the ball out on time. The pick-6 - a bad decision to force the ball into traffic after rolling out to his left - was the lone blemish on his day. All in all, a pretty solid debut for the Browns' third-round rookie. As was the case for Shedeur Sanders last week, it won't mean much in terms of the starting spot - Joe Flacco is Cleveland's clear QB1. But if Gabriel and Sanders are both worth developing, is Kenny Pickett's roster spot actually safe? The veteran passer remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. And while cutting him might be a tough sell after the Browns gave up a fifth-round pick for him in March, keeping four quarterbacks on the roster probably isn't the most appealing option, either.</p><p><strong>Chubb leads backfield</strong></p><p>The Texans gave the starting offense two drives in Saturday's game against the Panthers. Fantasy managers monitoring Houston's running back situation might find it notable that Nick Chubb was out there for both possessions. Woody Marks, who's been generating some positive buzz throughout camp, didn't see the field until the starters had left the game. While the fourth-round rookie is still an interesting target if you don't buy a 29-year-old Chubb's chances of hanging onto the lead job in Joe Mixon's absence, I might suggest keeping an eye on Dameon Pierce too.</p><p>Pierce wasn't active for this game, but he reportedly got some work with starters in practice this week. He's become something of a forgotten man after spending two years being phased out of a zone-heavy run game that simply didn't fit his skill set. Could the Texans' switch at offensive coordinator, and the return of more gap-scheme principles, open the door for a surprise resurgence? Pierce ran for 939 yards and four touchdowns as part of a terrible Houston offense as a rookie in 2022. He's basically free in fantasy drafts right now, and the potential payoff could be pretty substantial.</p><p><strong>Colts' QB watch</strong></p><p>Daniel Jones got the start for the Colts this week. All it took was one brutal third-down shot to Tyler Warren and my priors were confirmed. Jones might look fine at times in the quick-hit passing game, racking up useless box-score stats in the process, but this is who he is at this point. His inability to effectively push the ball downfield would limit the Colts' offense in the exact same way it did with the Giants.</p><p>Anthony Richardson's had his share of issues to this point in his career, but he's far from a finished product. The former No. 4 pick demonstrated some improved accuracy on his touchdown drive with the second-team offense, going 5-of-6 for 64 yards. Though his other two possessions were less productive, he did have a ridiculous deep ball wiped out by a penalty. Let's hope that the Colts make the right decision and roll with the young quarterback who still has a chance to become something. It's possible he never gets there, but he definitely won't improve without the reps he needs to develop. Jones isn't nearly good enough to justify passing up Richardson's chance to reach that ceiling.</p><p><strong>Henderson dazzles again</strong></p><p>I don't know how many more ways I can say it: TreVeyon Henderson looks outstanding. The second-round rookie got plenty of work with the Patriots' first-team offense for the second week in a row, taking four carries for 20 yards and a touchdown. For a player who might be widely perceived as a pass-game specialist, the 11-yard score was a great example of Henderson's underrated strength between the tackles. Rhamondre Stevenson is still involved here, but it shouldn't surprise anyone if the rookie quickly emerges as the centerpiece of New England's offense. Good things are going to happen when the Patriots get the ball in Henderson's hands.</p><p><strong>Mukuba making plays</strong></p><p>The Eagles' starting safety spot alongside Reed Blankenship is one of the only question marks on their roster heading into the fall. Andrew Mukuba appears to be making his case after missing some time early in camp. The second-round rookie recorded a pair of turnovers in the first half against the Browns, taking an interception back 75 yards for a touchdown and securing a fumble recovery two drives later. Mukuba may lack ideal size for the safety position, but he's got pretty much everything else you could want from an impact player on the back end. His coverage instincts and downhill physicality in the run game should be a nice addition to an already great Philadelphia defense.</p><p><strong>TeSlaa continues to shine</strong></p><p>Admittedly, I wasn't a fan of Detroit trading a pair of future third-round picks to move up 32 spots for Isaac TeSlaa in the third round of this year's draft. The process remains problematic, but it might not matter if the results work out for the Lions. TeSlaa's strong preseason suggests things are heading in that direction. He was once again a big-time playmaker against the Dolphins, recording four receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown. The 18-yard score was a particularly impressive rep, with TeSlaa rising up to win the contested catch in the end zone. For a player who many saw as a bit of a developmental project (myself included), he seems to be coming along quite nicely. His size, athleticism, and hands have never been in doubt. It might not be long before TeSlaa's pushing Tim Patrick for a meaningful role alongside Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.</p><p><strong>Chism steals the show</strong></p><p>Efton Chism III going off for six catches, 71 yards, and a touchdown in the first half of Saturday's game against the Vikings is a classic example of a preseason star. The undrafted rookie is still a long shot to factor into a crowded Patriots receiver room this season, but he's certainly made an impression. He'll be a part of this roster, giving New England another fascinating young player to develop for the future. In the meantime, look for him to make an impact on special teams. The elusiveness and tackle-breaking ability he demonstrated on his 12-yard score should serve him particularly well as a return man.</p><h3>Friday games</h3><p><strong>Sleeper Seahawks?</strong></p><p>Nobody should overreact to a single possession of preseason football. Still, I can't help but wonder whether the Seahawks' first-team offense putting together a flawless touchdown drive against the Chiefs is a sign of things to come. The new-look offensive line seems to be taking quite well to Klint Kubiak's system. That unit opened up one big lane after another as Zach Charbonnet turned his five carries into 45 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown scamper. First-round rookie guard Grey Zabel was particularly outstanding.</p><p>We'll see how it all looks in the regular season. Nothing truly matters until then. However, it's easy enough to envision this group taking a big step forward on the back of a consistent run game and a play-action-heavy passing attack. Remember: Kubiak had the Saints offense looking incredibly dangerous early last season before injuries hit. Building (and sustaining) anything like that in Seattle would provide the perfect complement to one of the league's premier defenses. Maybe the Seahawks should be getting more attention as a dark horse in the NFC.</p><p><strong>Milroe mixes in</strong></p><p>Jalen Milroe got his opportunity to run the offense late in the game. As was the case last week, there were some glimpses that should have Seahawks fans excited about his future. The third-round rookie won't challenge for the starting quarterback job any time soon, but that doesn't mean he's not going to see the field quickly. Milroe getting subbed in for a sneak on Sam Darnold's lone drive would appear to confirm that he's tracking toward some sort of package role. And considering his rushing ability may only be matched by Lamar Jackson, it seems like a pretty smart plan. Getting Milroe involved on occasion, potentially even as part of a 2-QB package, can only give the Seahawks more ways to attack opponents.</p><p><strong>Falcons play it safe</strong></p><p>Michael Penix Jr. sat out for most of the preseason as a rookie last year, despite being clearly headed for a backup role. With that in mind, perhaps we shouldn't be surprised he's now gone two weeks without a single rep. Am I the only one who thinks Atlanta would be wise to give him some live game action? I understand the desire to protect your players, but we're talking about a young quarterback who started three games during the previous season. With the Falcons counting on Penix for a breakout year to help end this stretch of mediocrity, it might be a good idea for him and the rest of the first-team offense to get some reps in next week's preseason finale.</p><p><strong>Titans' rookies flash</strong></p><p>Cam Ward made headlines this week when he said the Titans have a top-five receiving corps in the NFL. Bottom five would probably be more accurate, if we're being honest. But that doesn't mean there aren't some interesting pieces in place. Two such players had an impact in Friday's preseason game against the Falcons. Fourth-round rookie wideout Elic Ayomanor delivered the play of Tennessee's opening drive with a 35-yard catch-and-run, showcasing the talent that should soon have him challenging Van Jefferson, who had a rough drop on an incredible throw from Ward. Keep an eye on Gunnar Helm, too. The fourth-round rookie caught all four of his first-half targets for 48 yards, the highlight being an impressive 25-yard touchdown in traffic. Helm is going to make it tough for the Titans to keep him off the field, particularly in red-zone situations.</p><p><em>Dan Wilkins is theScore's senior NFL writer.</em></p>

<p><em>theScore's Dan Wilkins offers up his bold predictions for the 2025 fantasy football season.</em></p><p><strong>Cowboys support two WR1s</strong></p><p>I'm all-in on George Pickens this year. His game-changing ability was made abundantly clear throughout his time in Pittsburgh, but some dreadful quarterback play got in the way of him ever enjoying a true breakout. Not only is Dak Prescott an incredible upgrade, but he's also the kind of QB who's willing to push the ball downfield and give Pickens opportunities to do what he does best.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Conventional wisdom suggests Pickens' ceiling remains capped due to CeeDee Lamb's presence. As a result, Pickens is being drafted as the WR29, according to Fantasy Pros ADP. I'm not sure I can get on board with that, given there should be plenty of targets to go around in Dallas' offense for the star duo. The team's backfield situation points to a pass-heavy unit this year, and the defense could easily put this group in position for a number of shootouts. I don't see why Lamb and Pickens can't both end up as top 12 fantasy WRs, something we saw from two pairs of teammates (A.J. Brown-Devonta Smith, Tyreek Hill-Jaylen Waddle) in 2022.</p><p><strong>Davante outperforms Puka</strong></p><p>It's not hard to figure out why Puka Nacua heads into the fall ranked as a top-seven player by ADP. He's been one of the best receivers in football since landing with the Rams as a sixth-round pick in 2023, while only five wideouts have exceeded his 9.5 targets per game over that stretch. But volume is only part of the equation. Touchdowns are a must for a high-end WR1 in fantasy, and Nacua has found the end zone just nine times across his first two seasons.</p><p>That's not to say he can't or won't improve in that department. It's probably only a matter of time before a superstar like this starts scoring at a higher clip. However, it seems like a major reason the Rams acquired Davante Adams was to get a boost in that area of the game. The three-time All-Pro, who's posted double-digit touchdowns in six different seasons, remains one of the NFL's premier route-runners. His ability to destroy one-on-one matchups on the outside should quickly make him a go-to option for Stafford, particularly in the red zone. Adams also just so happens to be one of the few receivers to have topped Nacua's volume over the last two years. His mid-fourth-round ADP will be a steal if he puts up the numbers I'm expecting.</p><p><strong>Fields finishes as top 7 QB</strong></p><p>I still have plenty of questions about whether Justin Fields will ever figure things out as a passer. At this point, it may never happen. But that's a problem for the real-life Jets to sort out. Anyone who has paid attention to Fields' career from a fantasy perspective should understand the potential for major value, regardless.</p><p>Fields remains one of the NFL's premier runners at quarterback. He finished as the overall QB6 in 2022 almost exclusively because of his 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. The Jets should look to take full advantage of that ability as part of a run-heavy offense this campaign. Fields will get his share of opportunities on designed looks behind a suddenly potent offensive line, and he'll add plenty more in the scramble drill. Crucially, a two-year, $40-million deal should secure him the starting job throughout the season, even if success doesn't come. Yet, he's never finished a season as the overall fantasy TE1. With Brock Bowers and Trey McBride being drafted well ahead of him, there seems to be an expectation it'll stay that way. I'm not so sure.</p><p>Kittle is coming off the most efficient campaign of his career, leading all players at his position with 11.8 yards per target (minimum 50 receptions). There hasn't been a tight end to top that mark since Antonio Gates in 2010. The ceiling on the six-time Pro Bowler's production is purely a matter of opportunity. With that in mind, this seems like the perfect year for Kittle to crack 100 targets for the first time since 2019. Brandon Aiyuk is unlikely to be ready for game action until October at the earliest, and a calf issue has sidelined Jauan Jennings for most of training camp. Ricky Pearsall is a promising sophomore, but the receiving corps is thin otherwise. Kittle could be the clear No. 1 target in this passing game for a good chunk of the season, putting him in position for monster numbers.</p><p><strong>CMC returns as overall RB1</strong></p><p>I totally understand any uneasiness about the idea of counting on McCaffrey this season. The fantasy managers who took him at the top of their drafts last year probably didn’t end up having a lot of fun. And at 29 years old, it’s only becoming more difficult to sell yourself on the idea that he’ll both regain his previous form and put together a full season.</p><p>The odds of that actually happening? No idea. I’m not a doctor. Here’s what I do know: McCaffrey’s do-it-all skill set is RB1 material anywhere. In this offense, it’s a fantasy cheat code. He’s going to have his regular high-volume workload if healthy, and all reports from 49ers camp suggest he looks great. So with some major question marks at receiver, give me McCaffrey as the overall RB1 and Kittle as the overall TE1. It would be the first time that an offense produced the top scorers at both RB and TE since the Chargers had LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates do it back in 2006.</p><p><strong>Egbuka leads Bucs WRs</strong></p><p>Emeka Egbuka was one of the more shocking picks of the first round in this year's draft. That had nothing to do with ability, but rather the landing spot in Tampa Bay. Did the reigning NFC South champs really need another receiver? As it turns out, yes. Chris Godwin reportedly had a second procedure done on his ankle this spring. He's yet to get back on the practice field, and there's no clear timeline for his return. That opens the door for Egbuka to start the season as the No. 2 wideout alongside Mike Evans. While the 32-year-old is still playing at a high level, will anyone be surprised if he cedes volume to the younger, more versatile Egbuka? There's a path for him to be a legitimate fantasy WR2 as a rookie.</p><p><strong>Metcalf catches 115 passes</strong></p><p>Did you know that DK Metcalf has never topped 100 receptions in a campaign? His career-high sits at 90, and he managed just 66 catches in each of the last two seasons. Those are pretty surprising numbers for a player who's now earning $30 million per year. Something tells me the Steelers want to get their money's worth on that investment.</p><p>How might that be? Well, who else is going to be catching passes in this offense? Outside of Metcalf, Pittsburgh's WR room looks particularly horrific. Metcalf also appears well on his way to developing a strong connection with Aaron Rodgers, who has never been shy about force-feeding his top receiver. Just look at Davante Adams - he received 114 targets across 11 games after joining the Jets in a midseason trade, despite having another star receiver on the other side of the field. Aller / Getty Images</span></figcaption></figure><p><strong>Mason finishes as top 24 RB</strong></p><p>Jordan Mason is coming off the board as the RB34 with an eighth-round ADP. Not bad for a player who could end up winning you your fantasy league. Although the presence of Aaron Jones will cap his upside to some extent, all reports out of Vikings camp suggest the backfield will feature a pretty even split. Considering Minnesota's struggles in short-yardage spots last year, it's only fair to assume that Mason's share will include most of the goal-line situations. That could be a particularly valuable role for an offense that I expect to score a lot. Think of it as a diet version of the early days of the David Montgomery-Jahmyr Gibbs duo in the Lions backfield, with Mason having the Montgomery role. He can put up RB2 numbers as the Vikings lean on the ground game to best support J.J. McCarthy.</p><p><strong>2 rookies TE1s</strong></p><p>It wasn't too long ago that we had to temper expectations for rookie tight ends. The unique physical demands of the position had often made for a tough transition from the college level. While the blocking-related challenges remain, teams have become more creative in getting these dynamic pass-catchers involved. We can expect to see plenty more of that this year.</p><p>Colston Loveland, most notably, feels like a top-12 lock at the position. Ben Johnson undoubtedly has big plans for the first draft pick of his tenure as the Bears' head coach. And with a skill set that reminds me of Darren Waller, I think Loveland could easily slide into the Sam LaPorta role in this offense. Tyler Warren shouldn't be far behind. The Colts' first-round pick is more power than finesse, but he's no stranger to high-volume production after a ridiculous season in which Penn State got him the ball every way imaginable. He'll be an immensely valuable security blanket over the middle of the field for whoever is playing quarterback in Indy. And don't rule out a Day 2 pick like Terrance Ferguson pushing TE1 production sooner than later. I think this rookie class is pretty special, and we should see results immediately.</p><p><strong>Texans produce top defense</strong></p><p>The Broncos and Eagles will probably be the defenses you see fly off the board when someone in your home league inevitably gets that party started too early. There's no need to beat them to the punch. As good as those units should be, I don't see why the Texans can't be even better. This team has everything you want from a top-scoring fantasy defense, as it ranked second in interception rate last year (3.4%) and finished in the top four in sack rate (8.8%). Offensive improvements could create even more opportunities in 2025 for this aggressive DeMeco Ryans-led defense, helping Houston dominate both categories and beat up on the rest of the AFC South. I'll gladly scoop up this unit a round or so after the initial run on defenses begins.</p>

<p>Well, well, well. If it isn't the consequences of Jerry Jones' actions.</p><p>It's long been clear to the entire football world - Jones family aside - that the Dallas Cowboys were playing with fire by taking their sweet time with Micah Parsons' contract. At best, the result would be again paying a far more substantial price than if they had signed him before the edge-rusher market exploded. At worst, they risked ruining the relationship with their best player.</p><p>Both scenarios have now come to fruition just a week into training camp, as Parsons revealed in a social media post Friday that he <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3318844" href="https://thescore.com/news/3318844">wants to be traded</a>.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>These requests don't always lead to moves, but Parsons seems uniquely upset with how the Cowboys have (or haven't) handled business to this point. You can bet that rival general managers are already picking up the phone.</p><p>Parsons won't come cheap, as the trade cost could run as high as three first-round picks. An acquiring club would also have to give him a long-term deal worth at least $42 million per year. Still, it's not every day a player like this is made available. Nearly every team in the league should be interested.</p><p>Which potential landing spots might make the most sense?</p><h3>New England Patriots</h3><p><strong>💰 Cap space: </strong>$59.9M</p><p>New England has done an impressive job of rebuilding the roster in the first offseason under Mike Vrabel. With a number of impact additions on both sides of the ball bolstering Drake Maye's supporting cast, the Patriots look poised to make a substantial jump. Acquiring Parsons would further accelerate their timeline.</p><p>Parsons is the most explosive edge defender in the game today. Adding his elite skill set to round out a pass-rush unit already featuring Milton Williams, Christian Baremore, Keion White, and Harold Landry III would be a defensive coach's dream. Vrabel could do some incredible things with a group like that after consistently getting the most out of a mediocre roster in Tennessee.</p><p>New England's cap books will get a little tighter next season, but the club has several contracts it could move to create flexibility at that time. The Pats will also be rolling over plenty of unused space from this year. And if they're truly trending back toward playoff contention, parting with multiple first-rounders becomes a much easier cost to absorb.</p><h3>Los Angeles Chargers</h3><p><strong>💰 Cap space: </strong>$31.4M</p><p>The Chargers took a massive step forward in 2024, returning to the playoff mix in their first year under head coach Jim Harbaugh. A resurgent defense was key to the impressive turnaround, with Jesse Minter's unit finishing tied for seventh in EPA/play allowed, according to Next Gen Stats. That success is even more impressive considering the team's first offseason under the new regime was more of a teardown process than anything else.</p><p>Now that the books are back in order, the Chargers have a ton of cap flexibility looking to the future. Not only do they have the seventh-most space of any team in the league right now, but they've also got a projected $84.5 million to play with looking ahead to 2026. L.A. could reset the edge market for Parsons and still have plenty of wiggle room to bolster the roster next spring.</p><p>Pairing Parsons' rare talent alongside Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu would immediately give the Chargers the sort of elite pass-rush that opens up even more possibilities for Minter as a play-caller. And with Parsons still only 26 years old, he'd be an excellent fit to maximize the extended window created by this young core.</p><h3>Denver Broncos</h3><p><strong>💰 Cap space: </strong>$12.6M</p><p>After a rocky start to his time in Denver, Sean Payton has quickly steered the Broncos back on the right track. Hitting on the Bo Nix pick was a significant part of last year's run to the playoffs, but just as crucial was the defense emerging as one of the league's most dominant units out of nowhere. Denver finished the year ranked first in EPA/play allowed.</p><p>That group has a chance to be even better after adding a trio of impact starters in Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga, and first-round corner Jahdae Barron. But why stop there? Have we ever known Payton to sit back while other teams make the big moves? For better or worse, his undying aggressiveness is a major reason the Saints ended up in the cap predicament they're still trying to climb out of.</p><p>However, Denver's circumstances aren't quite the same as what unfolded in New Orleans. With Nix only entering the second year of his rookie deal, the Broncos can and should be going all out to build the best roster they possibly can. While they may appear short on cap space this year, they've got a projected $46.5 million at their disposal in 2026. Add Parsons to that already-stellar defense, and we could be looking at a legitimate threat in the AFC.</p><h3>Seattle Seahawks</h3><p><strong>💰 Cap space: $34.6M</strong></p><p>The Seahawks seem to be flying under the radar heading into 2025. On one hand, it makes sense. Trading away Geno Smith only to sign Sam Darnold probably isn't the best way to inspire confidence that they'll improve on last year's average performance. But there's some potential here.</p><p>Most notably, Mike Macdonald is in the early stages of building the type of dominant defense he put together in Baltimore - Seattle finished the 2024 season tied for 11th in EPA/play allowed. The Seahawks have several promising young players who should continue to grow into prominent roles under one of the game's premier defensive minds. Putting Parsons on the edge could immediately push this group over the top.</p><p>Along with the premium picks, Seattle could offer up a young pass-rusher like Boye Mafe to soften the blow of Parsons' departure in Dallas. It's a bit of an interesting fit, given that Parsons <a href="https://thescore.com/news/3241611">took exception</a> to DeMarcus Lawrence's comments after he left for the Seahawks in the spring, but perhaps they could now bond over their distaste for the Cowboys.</p><h3>Dallas Cowboys</h3><p><strong>💰 Cap space: </strong>$31.4M</p><p>Dallas is our final team that should be going all-in for Parsons, because what in the world are we doing here?</p><p>Negotiating these deals doesn't need to be nearly as complicated as Jones consistently makes it out to be. Do you have a young All-Pro approaching the end of his contract? Great. Have you considered possibly giving him a new one in line with his market value, readily determined by other top deals at his position?</p><p>The Cowboys could've signed Parsons for a bargain $35 million per season if they had enough foresight to pursue the deal last year - when Parsons said his camp first reached out to the team. But just like with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, Jones was content to wait it out, costing himself millions upon millions of dollars. Not exactly smart business.</p><p>Freezing out a player's agents to get a contract done isn't any wiser. But letting Parsons go, even for a major haul of draft capital, would be just as shortsighted. You can only hope those picks eventually add up to something close to the value of a 26-year-old All-Pro edge rusher. Dallas needs to take the necessary steps to make this right.</p><p>A resolution probably won't be easy. Parsons' candid statement Friday would appear to suggest he's done with the Cowboys. It's tough to blame him. Maybe he's intent on forcing his way out. But we all thought the same thing about Myles Garrett and the Browns, didn't we? Many of us have been waiting a long time for things to click for him as a passer. At this point, it's possible it never happens.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>But that doesn't mean he can't still be a valuable fantasy asset. Think back to that incredible 2022 season. While Fields' shortcomings as a passer were undoubtedly a problem for the Bears in real life, his 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground still helped him finish as a top-six QB in fantasy.</p><p>Fields will get plenty of runway as the Jets' starter after signing a two-year, $40-million deal in free agency. And with a defenive-minded head coach in Aaron Glenn, you can bet New York will favor a run-heavy approach in complementing its defense. The Jets rounding out an impressive young offensive line at the top of this year's draft sets the stage for Fields to lead the charge on that front. He's currently being drafted as the 14th QB off the board. Bold, I know. But hey, it's probably worth touching on this one. Last season's injury issues seem to have had a major impact on the fantasy community's willingness to count on the 49ers running back. His 9th overall ADP is the lowest its been since 2018.</p><p>On one hand, it makes sense. The 29-year-old has a pretty extensive injury history. And there aren't many running backs who maintain elite levels of production at this point in their career. But this is still McCaffrey we're talking about.</p><p>There's a reason he's been a top-two fantasy pick for six years running - no other back can offer this much upside both as a runner and as a receiver out of the backfield. And his role as the centerpiece of a Kyle Shanahan offense pushes the fantasy potential through the roof. Will he be able to stay healthy enough to deliver? Beats me. There's something about veteran savvy that all too often tricks me into believing they can produce at a high level for longer than is actually possible. Sue me. I assure you, though, this is not one of those occasions.</p><p>Adams' 37th overall ADP - the cheapest he's been since 2017 - can only be explained by fantasy managers overthinking the age. Despite a midseason move to New York, and some clear issues getting back on the same page with longtime teammate Aaron Rodgers, Adams posted 854 yards and seven touchdowns in just 11 appearances with the Jets. Extrapolate that out to a 17-game schedule, and you're looking at 1,300 yards and double-digit touchdowns.</p><p>The 32-year-old is one of the best route-runners this league has ever seen. His game was always going to age gracefully. Joining the Rams affords him the perfect situation to prove how much he's got left in the tank. He can go up and get it as well as anyone, but the rest of his game leaves a lot to be desired. That's probably part of the reason the Steelers were content to move on for little more than a 2026 third-round pick.</p><p>And yet here we are getting excited about Pickens anyway. Why? Well, for starters, the situation upgrade is staggering. For as many faults as he may have, Pickens overcame some truly horrific quarterback play to produce at a fairly consistent level in Pittsburgh. The move to Dallas hooks him up with Dak Prescott, one of the 10 best QBs in football when healthy.</p><p>Defenses focusing their attention on CeeDee Lamb, mostly lined up in the slot, should open up plenty of opportunities for Pickens to do his thing on the outside. And if the current state of the Cowboys backfield is any indication, it's possible that this ends up being an extremely pass-heavy offense. Going from Geno Smith to a fading version of Aaron Rodgers is a pretty clear downgrade at quarterback. And an Arthur Smith offense is bound to be more run-heavy than what we saw from Ryan Grubb in Seattle last year.</p><p>Barring another aggressive move from the Steelers, though, there is effectively no competition for targets. Metcalf is the clear No. 1 receiver, and his areas of dominance - slants and fades - would appear to be a particularly strong fit for what his new quarterback likes to do most.</p><p>Nobody in Pittsburgh is going to develop a Davante Adams-like relationship with Rodgers. But the way targets shook out for Adams with the Jets last season - 114 in 11 games - demonstrates Rodgers' clear willingness to feed his top target. Now picture what those numbers could look like on a team that doesn't have Garrett Wilson as the No. 2. Metcalf being drafted at the top of the fifth round feels way too late to me.</p><p><strong>More from this series:</strong></p><ul>
