<p>The Giants have a new quarterback.</p><p>Adding Russell Wilson on a <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3250596" href="https://thescore.com/news/3250596">one-year deal</a> isn't exactly a significant commitment. But it's not nothing, either. The 10-time Pro Bowler wouldn't sign in New York if he was not under the impression he'll open the season as the starter.</p><p>The splash move could tell us something about how the Giants are approaching April's draft, in which they hold the No. 3 overall pick. A few possibilities:</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><h3>Trading up is off the table</h3><p>New York has been among the teams thought to be interested in a move up to the No. 1 spot in the draft to select Miami quarterback Cam Ward. The Titans might yet deal the pick, but they've stayed out of the veteran quarterback market in free agency and loaded up on the offensive line, which may have signaled their intentions.</p><p>The Titans have become "increasingly impressed" with Ward throughout the pre-draft process, pushing the price of the pick even higher, ESPN's Adam Schefter <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3250363" href="https://thescore.com/news/3250363">reported</a> Tuesday.</p><p>Striking out on Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers, then having the Ward pipe dream taken off the table would be a rough outcome for the Giants. Wilson might have been their last option.</p><h3>Browns taking Shedeur</h3><p>Ward, of course, isn't the only quarterback in the mix for teams at the top of the draft. Shedeur Sanders also has a pretty strong case to come off the board early. But if Ward is locked in with the Titans, the Giants have to assess the chances that Sanders could fall to them at No. 3. Signing Wilson could be a sign that New York believes the Colorado product won't make it past Cleveland at No. 2.</p><p>Sanders appears to have a wide range of outcomes. Indications from the combine suggest that teams see a sizable gap between Ward and the rest of the quarterback class, with some insiders suggesting Sanders could even be in for a bit of a slide in the first round.</p><p>Our most recent <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3243712" href="https://thescore.com/news/3243712">mock draft</a> had him going to the Browns at No. 2 anyway. The logic: Sanders figures to be a strong fit for Kevin Stefanski's offense. Myles Garrett's cryptic expressions of excitement about the team's plans at quarterback could suggest he knows a big move is in store on draft night. And how else are the Browns going to get a quarterback? It's worth a shot.</p><h3>Giants passing on Shedeur</h3><p>Let's say the Browns don't draft Sanders. What if the Giants have also determined they won't take him at No. 3?</p><p>The concerns about Deion Sanders steering certain teams away from his son never seemed to include New York. Shedeur showing up to his bowl game in <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/shedeur-sanders-shows-off-giants-themed-cleats-before-bowl-game">Giants cleats</a> was a pretty clear sign about where he wanted to be. But again, evaluations of his NFL future seem to be all over the map.</p><p>The Giants could be one of the teams that doesn't see him as a top talent in this draft, even when factoring for position value. If that's the case, it's easy to see why they might bring in a pair of veterans, look elsewhere at No. 3, and try to circle back to the second tier of quarterbacks at the top of Day 2. The Giants might be focused on taking Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter, the consensus top two overall talents in the draft.</p><h3>Wilson changes nothing</h3><p>Although embattled general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll chased veteran quarterbacks throughout the offseason, signing Wilson after adding Jameis Winston does not rule out pursuing a quarterback of the future at the top of the draft. Only $14.5 million is tied up in the two veterans.</p><p>Wilson isn't going to make the team competitive; his greatest value would be providing a steady bridge option that allows New York to be patient and avoid rushing a rookie onto the field.</p><p>If the Giants like a quarterback enough to draft him in the first round, their free-agent moves at the position are no reason to pass. Williams' contested-catch ability is a good fit in theory, and it's a fine gamble at the price point. But this can't be the only move they make at receiver - not if the goal is to be a serious contender. Williams was cut when Jim Harbaugh's staff took over last year. Nothing about his 2024 season - 298 yards across 18 games split between the Jets and Steelers - suggests the decision was an error in judgment. Go see if the Bengals can be convinced to part with Tee Higgins. Or maybe the 49ers really would move Brandon Aiyuk. If not, don't be afraid to get aggressive in the draft. Finding a true No. 1 target alongside Ladd McConkey is the key to unlocking Justin Herbert and pushing the Chargers into contention.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>✂️ <strong>Jets release C.J. Mosley</strong></p><p>Mosley immediately becomes the top available name among free-agent linebackers. Injuries impacted the beginning and end of his stay in New York, but he had an outstanding three-year run in between. He racked up 478 tackles from 2021-23 while earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2022 and serving as a leader on one of the league's premier defenses. While the Jets moving on from Mosley always seemed possible after they re-signed breakout star Jamien Sherwood, the 32-year-old can still help a contender on a short-term deal. Reuniting with former Jets head coach Robert Saleh, who is back as the defensive coordinator in San Francisco, could be a logical move after the 49ers lost Dre Greenlaw in free agency.</p><p><strong>🔁 Cowboys acquire Kenneth Murray</strong><br><em>Trade terms: Titans send LB to Dallas for late-round pick swap</em></p><p>Two Cowboys trades in one day. And both are similar levels of weird. One pick swap to take a swing on a former first-round pick is fine. Whatever. But going back to the well for a second time raises some questions. Namely: Are you under the impression this is some sort of market inefficiency? Murray was available because the Titans had seen enough one season after giving him a two-year, $15.5-million deal in free agency. Can you really expect to solve your linebacker issues by giving up draft capital, however minimal, for the right to pay Murray his remaining $7.4 million? This appears to be Jerry Jones' definition of a "selectively aggressive" approach to the offseason. To the surprise of absolutely no one, it's not a very good one.</p><p>✍️ <strong>Seahawks sign DeMarcus Lawrence</strong><br><em>3-year deal worth up to $42M</em></p><p>The Seahawks offense remains a work in progress after trading away DK Metcalf and swapping out Geno Smith for Sam Darnold. It's far less difficult to understand the path to success on the defensive side. Mike Macdonald's first year as head coach had some promising flashes, particularly when the defensive line was healthy. Re-signing Jarran Reed was the first move in solidifying that group, and Lawrence raises the ceiling a bit more. The sack numbers haven't been spectacular over the past few years, but he still applies pressure at a decent enough rate and he's always been an effective run defender. The price tag being reported as a max-value figure also suggests the initial numbers are including incentives. He should be a nice value addition for a defense that could be a lot better than most are expecting.</p><p>✍️ <strong>Steelers sign Darius Slay</strong><br><em>1-year, $10M</em></p><p>The Steelers had to find a way to upgrade the cornerback position this offseason. While they probably showed interest in some of the younger free agents at the position, the price tags were likely prohibitive - especially with Pittsburgh trying to make a move in the veteran cornerback market. Slay somehow continues to avoid a major dropoff and once again played at a high level for Philly's Super Bowl-winning defense last season. The 34-year-old could provide a short-term upgrade while the Steelers turn to the draft to find a long-term running mate for Joey Porter Jr.</p><p>✍️ <strong>Broncos sign Evan Engram</strong><br><em>2-year, $23M deal</em></p><p>Sean Payton said earlier this offseason the Broncos need to add a "joker" to the offense this offseason. In other words, he was looking for a versatile player who can create and exploit favorable matchups. Engram fits the bill. The former Jaguars tight end is coming off a frustrating 2024 campaign, but it wasn't that long ago when he showed what he's capable of as a high-volume target. He turned in a career year in 2023, putting up 114 receptions for 963 yards and four touchdowns. Potential first-round tight ends Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland have been popular mock-draft selections for Denver to this point. Engram's addition won't necessarily stop the Broncos from going that route, but they no longer need to force it to fill a need. The money involved here suggests Payton has big plans for his newest weapon.</p><p>✍️ <strong>Vikings sign Javon Hargrave</strong><br><em>2-year, $30M deal</em></p><p>The Vikings knew exactly what needed to be done this offseason. Hargrave and fellow free-agent signee Jonathan Allen should be an excellent veteran tandem to satisfy a glaring need on the interior defensive front. Minnesota took a similar approach on the offensive side, adding Will Fries and Ryan Kelly to shore up a leaky interior offensive line. Trench play becoming a strength for this team would allow for the schematic genius of this coaching staff to shine through on both sides of the ball. We're still waiting to find out whether J.J. McCarthy will be the uncontested starter at quarterback in Week 1, but the Vikings suddenly have a path to improving upon a stellar 2024 season either way.</p><p>✂️ <strong>Jets release Aaron Rodgers</strong></p><p>The Jets announced in mid-February that they'd move on from Rodgers this offseason. That move couldn't become official until the start of the new league year Wednesday, as New York will designate him as a post-June 1 cut to spread his dead-money hit over the next two seasons ($14 million in 2025, $35 million in 2026). Now, we wait for a decision. Most reports suggest that Rodgers is choosing between the Steelers and Giants. <a href="https://x.com/SeifertESPN/status/1899898962842149342">ESPN's Kevin Seifert</a> added Wednesday that the Vikings have "at least been entertaining the possibility" of adding the veteran quarterback alongside J.J. McCarthy. The 2024 first-round pick is seen as the future in Minnesota, but would it be that crazy if the Vikings wanted to bring him along slowly after he missed his entire rookie season with a knee injury? Rodgers completing <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3236591" href="https://thescore.com/news/3236591">the Brett Favre career path</a> would be fascinating.</p><p><strong>🔁 Cowboys acquire Kaiir Elam</strong><br><em>Trade terms: Bills send CB, 2025 6th-round pick to Dallas for 2025 5th-round pick, 2026 7th-round pick</em></p><p>A trade! Elam has been a major disappointment since landing in Buffalo as a first-round pick in 2022, starting only 12 games to this point. He's also only 23 years old, so it's easy to see why the Cowboys are willing to take a shot on his draft pedigree. That said, the Bills throwing in the towel after three years probably tells you everything you need to know about their evaluation. Getting a pick swap and an extra 2026 selection for a player the Bills just as easily could have cut is a good move for Buffalo.</p><p>✂️<strong> Rams release Cooper Kupp</strong></p><p>The Rams were always going to have trouble finding a trade partner for Kupp. Injuries have been an issue over Kupp's last three seasons, and the 31-year-old has shown some signs of slowing down when he is on the field. He could still be a productive target in the right situation, though. The Chargers haven't been able to fill their need at receiver; is staying in L.A. the most appealing option for Kupp at this stage of his career? The Patriots, meanwhile, desperately need a reliable target for Drake Maye, and if their reported big-money pitch to Chris Godwin is any indication, they might be the most willing to pay up. The Bears are another fun option to consider - they've been extremely aggressive in an effort to load up for Ben Johnson's first season as head coach. Kupp's ability from the slot, including his impact as a run-blocker, would be a nice way to round out the receiving corps.</p><p>✍️ <strong>Seahawks sign Marquez Valdes-Scantling</strong><br><em>1-year deal worth up to $5.5M</em></p><p>Ideally, the Seahawks will make a more significant move at receiver after parting ways with DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, whether it comes through free agency, a trade, or the draft. For the time being, Valdes-Scantling is an interesting addition. The veteran journeyman was shockingly productive after joining a beat-up Saints receiving corps last season, putting up 13 catches for 347 yards and four touchdowns over a five-game stretch. New Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who had the same role in New Orleans last year, clearly likes what he saw. Valdes-Scantling's ability to stretch the field could make him a decent WR3 if Seattle can find another starter to line up opposite breakout star Jaxon Smith-Njigba.</p>

</h2><p>✍️ <strong>Bills sign Joey Bosa</strong><br><em>1-year, $12.6M deal</em></p><p>There won't be a family reunion in San Francisco after all. Bosa playing with his brother was a fun thought after he got his release from the Chargers. And the 49ers parting ways with Leonard Floyd earlier in the day appeared to open the door for such a move. But there was always going to be a competitive market for a pass-rusher with this kind of talent, even with his injury history. The Bills are a fascinating fit. Improving the pass rush was a must heading into this offseason, and that was before the team opted to cut ties with Von Miller. Bosa can be the third-down game-wrecker Buffalo needs if he can stay on the field. At this price, it's a sensible bet to make.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>✍️ <strong>Ravens sign DeAndre Hopkins</strong><br>1-year, $5M deal</p><p>The Ravens have a new receiver. Hopkins isn't the game-changer he once was, but he doesn't need to be in this offense. Zay Flowers is the clear No. 1, and Rashod Bateman is trending toward being a legitimate secondary target after a nine-touchdown breakout season. Tight ends Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely should also continue to have significant roles in the passing game. Hopkins can be a strong addition to three-receiver sets, though, because his ability as a contested-catch threat on the outside should complement the rest of the group quite well. Hopkins has caught passes from 19 different quarterbacks, the most among active players, according to <a href="https://x.com/FrontOfficeNFL/status/1899599515059114217">NFL Research</a>. It's only right he gets the opportunity to team up with Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson in consecutive years to chase a Super Bowl ring.</p><p>✍️ <strong>Saints sign Justin Reid</strong><br><em>3-year, $31.5M deal</em></p><p>Reid going home to Louisiana is a pretty cool story. He's also still one of the game's most reliable safeties, so this certainly helps the NFL's 30th-ranked defense. All that being said, it's an odd move for the Saints. This team has been in cap hell forever. It's gotten so bad that Derek Carr's contract had to be restructured just to get under the ceiling for this year. The adjustment pushes his 2026 cap hit to $69.2 million. The Saints should be tearing this thing down, accepting that they're in for a rough year or two, then rebuilding it the right way. Adding a veteran defensive back on a salary like this is the latest sign they simply can't shake the urge to operate like a win-now team. Such decisions only make it more difficult to get the cap in order down the road.</p><p>✍️ <strong>Falcons sign Leonard Floyd</strong><br><em>1-year, $10M deal</em></p><p>Floyd finds a new home in Atlanta just hours after being released by the 49ers. The former first-rounder turns 33 in September, so it's hardly a long-term solution, but something had to be done. Floyd has quietly been one of the league's most consistent pass-rush specialists, putting up no fewer than 8.5 sacks for five consecutive seasons. The Falcons, for reference, haven't had a player reach that mark since Adrian Clayborn in 2017. Floyd's arrival, and perhaps the addition of another edge-rusher early in the draft, could go a long way toward solving the issues up front.</p><p><strong>✂️ 49ers release Leonard Floyd</strong></p><p>The 49ers moving on from Floyd after an 8.5-sack season leaves a significant void opposite Nick Bosa ... for now. We'll avoid making any sort of predictions here, but it appears possible this is a precursor to another big move. San Francisco has been linked to Bosa's older brother, Joey, following his release from the Chargers. It certainly wouldn't be a slam-dunk addition, as the five-time Pro Bowler was cut for a reason. Injuries have forced him to miss 24 games over the last three years. But the risk should be built into the cost of his next contract. If healthy, the Bosa brothers might be the league's premier edge-rush duo. And who doesn't love a family reunion? <strong>(Edit: Never mind!)</strong></p><p>✍️ <strong>Colts sign Daniel Jones</strong><br><em>1-year, $14M deal</em></p><p>Anthony Richardson has officially been put on notice. That may seem a bit extreme, but this clearly isn't your standard backup quarterback contract. Jones easily tops the $12.5 million that Gardner Minshew got as a bridge/fringe starter in Las Vegas last year. And the Colts have included incentives that could potentially push this deal up to $17.7 million. For reference, Justin Fields just got $20 million per year to be the clear-cut starter with the Jets. The Colts are hoping Richardson makes good on his sky-high potential, but they understandably aren't putting their eggs in one basket anymore. Is Daniel Jones a sure bet to return any significant value? Probably not. It's not like we haven't seen late breakouts before, though. Could the Colts provide the kind of situation that would allow the former first-round pick to take a Sam Darnold-like career path? We may find out if Richardson doesn't put it all together this year.</p><p><strong>🔁 Texans acquire C.J. Gardner-Johnson</strong><br><em>Trade terms: Eagles send DB to Houston for G Kenyon Green, pick swap</em></p><p>It's tough to figure out what the Eagles are doing with this one. Gardner-Johnson was a valuable piece for the league's best defense, finishing the 2024 regular season with six interceptions and checking in as PFF's eighth-ranked safety in coverage. The move will create a bit of space for big-money extensions in future seasons, and perhaps Philly is high on 2023 third-round pick Sydney Brown as his replacement. The return hardly seems worth it, though. Green, a frustrating player since being selected No. 15 overall in 2022, was benched in October. He wouldn't be the first talented athlete to take off under the guidance of offensive line guru Jeff Stoutland, but it's a big gamble. On the other side, this looks like a home run for the Texans. Adding Gardner-Johnson for such a low price is a savvy way to round out what may be one of the league's best secondaries.</p><p>✍️ <strong>Giants sign Jevon Holland</strong><br><em>3-year, $45M deal</em></p><p>The Giants made a big splash in the secondary on Day 1, adding former Saints cornerback Paulson Adebo on a three-year, $54-million deal. And they weren't done there. Upgrading the defensive backfield remained a focus early on Day 2 as New York reeled in arguably the top safety on the market. Holland is still just 25 years old and brings Pro Bowl-caliber playmaking skills to the deep middle. His presence as a rangy free safety should be an outstanding complement to 2024 second-round pick Tyler Nubin, who's at his best a little closer to the line of scrimmage. The Giants didn't have to go wild on the price tag, either. Holland's $15-million average is in line with other free-agent signees Camryn Bynum and Talanoa Hufanga and is $2 million shy of Tre'von Moehrig.</p><p>✍️ <strong>Vikings load up</strong><br><em>DT Jonathan Allen: 3-year, $60M deal<br>G Will Fries: 5-year, $88M deal</em></p><p>The Vikings started free agency with a pair of important moves, keeping top free-agent cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. and adding veteran center Ryan Kelly. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah ramped up the aggressiveness early on Day 2. Allen, who was released by the Commanders last week, fills a major need on the interior defensive line. Finally adding a player who can win one-on-one matchups inside could be a game-changer for a defense that had already had so much success creating pressure with schematic creativity. (The Commanders moving on from Allen only to spend the cap savings on Javon Kinlaw at $15 million per year is one of the more puzzling moves of the offseason thus far.) Fries is an ascending young player who'd been in the midst of a breakout season before suffering a broken tibia in Week 5. The big-money deal comes with a bit of risk, but he and Kelly could take care of Minnesota's interior offensive line concerns. It's nice to see the Vikings going all-in around J.J. McCarthy before he even gets on the field.</p>

<p>The NFL offseason just got interesting.</p><p>Friday night's surprise <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3236075" href="https://thescore.com/news/3236075">trade</a> sending Geno Smith from the Seahawks to the Raiders is notable enough. The new staff in Las Vegas has, seemingly out of nowhere, found a legitimate starter for nothing more than a late third-round pick. It's a puzzling move for Seattle, with no obvious replacement in-house, but it's tough to imagine the club doesn't have a pivot plan.</p><p>And thus begins another game of quarterback musical chairs. Multiple teams should be impacted by the fallout of this deal. If you squint, you might even see how it opens the door for maximum chaos: Aaron Rodgers completing the Brett Favre career arc.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Seahawks, according to recent reports, are expected to turn their attention to Sam Darnold when the free-agent negotiating period opens Monday. It makes a lot of sense. The 2024 breakout star with the Minnesota Vikings worked with new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak during his lone season in San Francisco in 2023, and he'd be a strong fit for Seattle's new, play-action heavy offense. He's also seven years younger than Smith.</p><p>Seattle swooping in to steal Darnold after an unexpected QB change would complicate things for the teams that figured to be in the mix for his services as a <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3234057" href="https://thescore.com/news/3234057">free agent</a>. That group includes, most notably, the Vikings.</p><p>J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback future in Minnesota. A real case can be made for simply handing him the keys to this 14-win team and starting that new era right now. Maybe that's exactly what the Vikings end up doing in the end. But the widely reported interest in running it back with Darnold on a short-term deal signals they might not be keen on rushing the process with their 2024 first-round pick. McCarthy missed his entire rookie campaign with a knee injury suffered in August.</p><p>At the very least, a veteran quarterback will be added as insurance. Daniel Jones, a former first-round pick who joined the Vikings after a late-season release from the Giants, is probably the most likely candidate to fill that role. But he's a free agent and will have other options.<strong> </strong>And who says the Vikings are content to aim that low, anyway?</p><p>That brings us to Rodgers. Multiple <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1898372872390758659">reports</a> have identified him as an option for the Vikings, in addition to the Giants, in anticipation of Darnold's departure. That could be a classic example of an agent trying to spark a non-existent market. In the interest of fun, though, let's assume there's something to it.</p><p>The 41-year-old's career path has already been oddly reminiscent of his Packers predecessor. Favre, like Rodgers, had long earned legend status in Green Bay. But the team's decision to draft a young quarterback a few years early (in this case, Rodgers) kick-started a dysfunctional relationship. He was eventually traded to the Jets, and it did not go well. A far more productive year in Minnesota followed.</p><p>Rodgers, who will soon be released after his nightmare stint in New York, could now be in position to mirror that last phase. Vikings fans will probably (and understandably) hate the idea. It's admittedly tough to feel confident that he has much left in the tank heading into Year 21. But we probably all thought the same thing about Favre when he moved to Minnesota.</p><p>A 39-year-old Favre ranked 21st in EPA/dropback in his lone season with the Jets, right between Trent Edwards and Tyler Thigpen, according to TruMedia. He climbed all the way to fourth the next year in Minnesota, flanked by Peyton Manning and Tom Brady among league leaders. Favre finished fourth in MVP voting in that 2009 campaign, leading the Vikings to a 12-4 record before they ultimately fell to the Saints in overtime of the NFC title game.</p><p>Rodgers would be a long shot to replicate that kind of success, but is it really that wild to think he could bounce back in the QB paradise that helped Darnold become a sought-after free agent? We saw some flashes from Rodgers down the stretch last season, including a Week 18 finale in which he posted his first four-touchdown game since 2021. It's not out of the question that he taps into that vintage form a little more regularly another year removed from the torn Achilles. An improved situation wouldn't hurt, either.</p><p>That appears to be exactly what the Rams were thinking when rumors circulated about Rodgers being the fallback option if they had been forced to trade Matthew Stafford. Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell, who developed under Los Angeles' Sean McVay, could be looking at it the same way.</p><p>In an ideal world, the upcoming season will be McCarthy's time to shine in Minnesota. The Vikings probably aren't going to block him for a full year of a veteran addition if they deem him ready to go. But any reservations on that front should, and likely will, open the door for someone like Rodgers. It's not as crazy as it might seem.</p><p>If nothing else, the entertainment factor would be off the charts.</p>

<p>Matthew Stafford passing on trade opportunities to stick with the Rams was the first of many dominoes to fall in the quarterback landscape this offseason.</p><p>How do teams in the mix for Stafford pivot? It never made much sense for this team to part with significant draft capital and make a major financial commitment to a 37-year-old, but everything's on the table when a general manager and head coach are desperate to save their jobs. Perhaps striking out on their top veteran target clears the way for a more logical way to get aggressive.</p><p>All reports out of the NFL combine suggest Cam Ward is considered to be in a tier of his own in this year's QB class. Rather than sit back and hope he's available at No. 3, the Giants should take matters into their own hands. A few Day 2 picks are a small price to pay to jump the Browns and land the No. 1 pick from the Titans.</p><p>New York would likely pair Ward with a veteran to avoid rushing him onto the field as a rookie. Russell Wilson could make sense, assuming he doesn't have much of a market after fizzling out down the stretch last year in Pittsburgh. But there are plenty of other free agents who could fill that role in the short term.</p><p>No matter who joins Ward, finding a way to land him at the top of the draft is key to the Giants establishing some sort of future. The Miami star's by far the most exciting option to pair with budding superstar receiver Malik Nabers. And for Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll, investing in a rookie QB probably buys them some extra time.</p><h3>Vet in Vegas</h3><p>Pete Carroll hasn't been shy about his plans to compete right away, so it was no surprise his new team was aggressive in its Stafford pursuit. The Raiders came up short, though, like the Giants. So, what now?</p><p>Tom Brady's relationship with Shedeur Sanders looms large here. Given the pessimism around Sanders' draft stock coming out of the combine, it appears increasingly likely the Colorado star could be available when the Raiders are on the clock at No. 6. But is a win-now team really going to hand the job to a polarizing rookie?</p><p>Sam Darnold feels like the most logical fit if we're sticking with veteran options. However, a recent <a href="https://x.com/VicTafur/status/1895221761215733891">report</a> suggested the Stafford chase was due in part to the Raiders being "lukewarm" on Darnold, among other options. Meanwhile, Wilson has the connection to Carroll, but the former Seahawks coach was ultimately vindicated by the decision to trade the QB away. Why go back now?</p><p>What if Aaron Rodgers - who figures to be short on suitors with the Rams out of the picture - comes relatively cheap? Raiders fans probably hate the idea no matter the price tag, and it's hard to blame them. But the future Hall of Famer did show some flashes down the stretch last season, and if he's motivated and healthier another year removed from his Achilles injury, perhaps he can provide more consistent production. It's not the craziest short-term fix for a Raiders team with nearly $100 million in cap space to upgrade the roster around him. League evaluators being down on Sanders - a near-consensus takeaway from insiders at the combine - appears to open the door for the possibility he's on the board at No. 7. While it's no guarantee the Jets would end his potential slide, they could probably justify the gamble more than any other club.</p><p>New York remains in a decades-long struggle at QB. Blue-chip talents at other spots are likely to be long gone by the time the Jets are on the clock, and it's not like they have many other options under center. Darnold probably isn't even answering the phone if they call about a reunion.</p><p>That dubious QB history could very well land the Jets on the list of teams Deion Sanders is steering away from drafting his son, but we'll leave any such speculation out of the equation here. There's momentum for true culture change with New York's new staff in place, and this is the kind of roster that can support a rookie QB. Tyrod Taylor already on the roster as a potential bridge starter and mentor helps, too.</p><p>Sanders could be worth a shot at No. 7, or even following a potential trade back to stockpile picks. One of these swings is going to hit eventually. And this may be the time to take another, unless the Jets plan on picking high in next year's draft, too. </p><h3>Browns do what they can</h3><p>The Browns are likely happy with Ward if he's available at No. 2. However, assuming the Giants trade up to No. 1, Cleveland will likely have to shift its focus to Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter. Reaching for a different QB may be a tough sell with a pair of elite talents on the board at other value positions.</p><p>So, what do their veteran options look like? In short: they're not great. Any big-money signing is off the table thanks to Deshaun Watson's albatross contract. Stafford was never a realistic option, they can't afford Darnold or Wilson, and it's tough to imagine Rodgers signing with a team with no cap flexibility to build around him.</p><p>All roads lead back to Kirk Cousins. The Falcons claim they're planning to keep him as a backup, but nobody believes that, and the 36-year-old veteran will surely be released when Atlanta fails to find a trade partner. And with a fully guaranteed $27.5 million still on the books, he'll head to free agency looking for nothing more than a league-minimum contract.</p><p>Signing Cousins after a season in which he was benched for a rookie QB wouldn't be the most inspiring move, but the bar can't be too high here. An optimist can also point to the fact Cousins was actually quite good before struggling with shoulder and elbow injuries in the second half. Could he regain his previous form now that he's healthy and a full season removed from a torn Achilles? Cleveland may as well find out. Selling the top pick to the highest bidder between the Browns and Giants would help Tennessee load up on draft capital while staying in range to draft either Hunter or Carter.</p><p>The QB position will then need to be addressed in free agency if that's how things shake out. Darnold's easily the most interesting open-market option, and the Titans have money to spend.</p><p>Signing the former first-round bust after a single breakout season in the Vikings' QB paradise will come with risk. Darnold reminded everyone of his limitations with a poor finish to the year, and the Titans can't offer anywhere near the same level of support. Still, we're talking about a 27-year-old with the talent of a mid-level starter. It's entirely possibly Darnold's best football is ahead of him.</p><p>It won't be cheap - QB contracts rarely are. But the Titans could probably structure a big-money deal with an escape if things aren't working out two years from now. Consider it an expensive bridge option with upside.</p><h3>Vikings turn to the kid</h3><p>It's almost J.J. McCarthy's time to shine. The Vikings will leave the door open for a Darnold return, but they can't (and likely won't) do anything that would block last year's first-round pick from seeing the field whenever he's ready.</p><p>Daniel Jones, who landed in Minnesota late last season, could be re-signed as an insurance option in case McCarthy needs to be brought along slowly after missing his entire rookie campaign with a knee injury. The Vikings are best off using Darnold's money to improve the rest of the roster, rather than wash out the advantage of having a QB on a rookie contract.</p><h3>Steelers stay conservative</h3><p>Anyone hoping the Steelers will make a big QB splash hasn't been paying attention to how this team does business. All indications suggest they'll re-sign one of last year's signal-callers, with Justin Fields the favorite over Wilson.</p><p>Fields emerging as the long-term answer feels like a long shot, but giving the 26-year-old another chance is far more reasonable than paying market value for an aging Wilson. It's not the worst option, considering how he played when healthy last year, but it's hardly an exciting one.</p><p>The cap ramifications are the more frustrating part of the equation. Rather than biting the bullet and moving on from Carr now, his return likely means New Orleans will restructure his contract in order to be cap compliant. The Saints are projected to be $47 million over the 2025 ceiling and can create around $30 million in space by pushing more of Carr's money to the future, according to <a href="https://overthecap.com/">Over The Cap</a>. But this probably isn't a situation worth continuing to kick the can down the road.</p><h3>Colts seek competition</h3><p>The Colts have been clear: they're committed to Anthony Richardson but will also add to the QB room this offseason. There are no clear options to unseat Richardson, 23 in May and heading into his third season, but a few veterans could provide some insurance in case his struggles continue.</p><p>Whichever Steelers QB hits the market between Wilson and Fields could provide legitimate competition for Richardson in camp. Marcus Mariota served as a mentor backup in Washington while Jayden Daniels put together an all-time rookie campaign, and don't forget about Zach Wilson. We've seen a few former draft busts put it all together later than expected. Wilson's time working under Sean Payton could have him better prepared to run an NFL offense, and the Colts should be open to all options.</p>

Darnold completely rehabilitated his value after an outstanding season with the Minnesota Vikings. While some might be skeptical he can sustain that level of play in a less favorable environment, it's still rare for a 27-year-old starter to hit the open market. At minimum, Darnold's camp is probably looking to top Derek Carr's $37.5-million average annual salary. Considering how many teams need a quarterback, Darnold could end up getting paid north of $40 million per year. Too much for one year of production? The former fifth-round pick actually ranks ninth in yards per reception (minimum 100 catches) since he entered the league in 2019. His ability in the vertical game could yield more impressive results away from the New York Giants and their consistently terrible quarterbacks - and other teams will be eager to find out. Slayton could easily sign for more than the $13-million average annual salary that Darnell Mooney and Gabe Davis got last year. The former undrafted free agent is testing the waters coming off a 2024 season in which he ranked 20th among all offensive tackles in PFF's Wins Above Replacement metric. Jackson is equally reliable in pass protection and run blocking, and at just 26 years old, there's reason to believe his best is yet to come. An ascendant 25-year-old with this kind of draft pedigree should generate significant interest. <p>The offseason is here, and this one should be a doozy.</p><p>There will be no shortage of stories dominating the never-ending football news cycle, with a few teams primed to spend, some interesting quarterback situations, and trade candidates already generating buzz. Here are 10 storylines that will define the next few months.</p><h3>What do the Bengals do?</h3><p>Joe Burrow hasn't been shy about putting pressure on the Bengals. The way the quarterback sees it, the team shouldn't think twice about extending receiver Tee Higgins and defensive end Trey Hendrickson while also getting Ja'Marr Chase the extension he deserves. It's tough to argue.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>But fitting it all together is going to require some creativity from the front office. Burrow recently (and strategically) praised the way the Super Bowl champion Eagles have been <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3216821" href="https://thescore.com/news/3216821">"paying everybody"</a> to keep a talented roster together. For the Bengals, that would likely require some sizeable signing bonuses to spread out cap commitments. That might be a tough sell for an ownership group that has historically stuck to pay-as-you-go contract structures.</p><p>The Chase extension is inevitable. Is there a world where Cincinnati could navigate re-signing or using the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3193035" href="https://thescore.com/news/3193035">franchise tag</a> on Higgins after giving his running mate upwards of $35 million per year? How can the Bengals improve the roster if Higgins walks and Hendrickson holds firm on last year's trade request? More importantly, how would Burrow take it?</p><h3>Garrett's trade request</h3><p>Myles Garrett made it clear he wants out of Cleveland. The Browns reportedly have no intention of granting his trade request. This one could get ugly.</p><p>If Garrett digs in, the team might have to consider trade options. The face of the franchise being so transparent about his desire to be elsewhere isn't good for anyone, and the Browns could kickstart a rebuild with the draft picks they'd get in return.</p><p>Garrett wants a chance to compete for a Super Bowl. Still a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate at 29, his presence could conceivably push a contender over the top. Several teams selecting at the end of the first round should be willing to part with their pick, but don't sleep on some of the teams drafting higher. Arguably the NFL's premier edge rusher at just 26, he's in a position to top Nick Bosa's market-setting $34-million annual average. Then again, this is the Cowboys we're talking about. It's never as easy as it should be.</p><p>Dallas let contract talks with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb drag on far longer than they should have. Both signed in the end, but at least one of the delays seemingly resulted in the Cowboys overpaying. Prescott got $60 million per season, $5 million per year clear of Burrow, Jordan Love, and Trevor Lawrence.</p><p>Perhaps the Cowboys learned their lesson, but they also don't have a lot of flexibility. Prescott and Lamb are scheduled to account for more than $120 million against the cap in 2025. Does Parsons hold out if a deal isn't in place by training camp? NFL Network reported last week that the team has at least kicked around the idea of a trade internally. If it gets to that point, suitors will be lining up with a boatload of premium picks.</p><h3>Draft QBs</h3><p>Quarterback landing spots will always be the top story of draft weekend. That's usually because at least one or two potential franchise passers are available. This year could be interesting for entirely different reasons.</p><p>Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders will have a chance to be stars in the NFL, but most evaluators probably would have had both outside the top four quarterbacks if they had been part of the 2024 draft.</p><p>Do the teams desperate for a quarterback at the top of this year's draft throw caution to the wind and take a swing anyway? It's not the worst idea, given the potential payoff, but passing on elite talents at other positions might be a mistake. You don't mess with success, and the veteran quarterback led the way to 14 wins. Then the last two games happened.</p><p>Darnold's play fell off a cliff against Detroit in the prime-time regular-season finale when the Vikings fell short in their bid for the No. 1 seed. He couldn't get anything going in a wild-card loss to the Rams, either. Re-signing him for something in the range of $40 million per year now feels fraught - especially with 2024 first-rounder J.J. McCarthy waiting in the wings.</p><p>Someone else will almost surely pay that price if Darnold gets to free agency. The Vikings could also opt for the bold move, hitting him with the franchise tag in hopes of finding a trade partner. Either way, there's going to be a significant market for his services. The totality of Darnold's season, even if it came in a dream situation for a QB, will have teams open to the idea that his resurrection is a sign of things to come.</p><h3>Cousins for cheap?</h3><p>Kirk Cousins' late-season benching in Atlanta is an ominous sign for his career. Don't write him off just yet, though.</p><p>Cousins <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3210459" href="https://thescore.com/news/3210459">revealed</a> after last season that he was playing through shoulder and elbow injuries from Week 10 onward. If that's true, his seventh-ranked standing in EPA/dropback over the first nine weeks of the season, according to TruMedia, becomes far more interesting. Could a healthy Cousins - another year removed from his Achilles tear - recapture that form?</p><p>Any team in need of a quarterback should be eager to find out. If the Falcons eat his fully guaranteed $27.5 million by releasing him, any other team could have the 36-year-old for the veteran minimum. An outside chance at steady quarterback play on such a minimal investment could be a steal. The Browns, whose cap is shackled by Deshaun Watson's albatross contract, should be all over this. It's tough to imagine either side is eyeing such an outcome, but it wouldn't be the first time business got in the way of an otherwise strong relationship.</p><p>Stafford is going to need a new contract. While the Rams will do their best to reach common ground, they'll likely show some restraint when it comes to opening the vault for the 37-year-old quarterback. The long process of last year's contract talks, which resulted in a one-year Band-Aid solution, signals the team's thinking.</p><p>Potentially getting a first-round pick for Stafford, and turning around to sign someone like Darnold in free agency, could be a logical way to start building around the young core drafted over the past two years. The Steelers stand out as an interesting option among potential trade suitors. Also desperate for a receiver, they could even entice Stafford by offering to bring Cooper Kupp with him.</p><h3>Commanders all in?</h3><p>A rookie quarterback taking the league by storm has a way of accelerating a team's timeline. Can Washington make the most of the short window it has before Jayden Daniels needs to be paid?</p><p>The Commanders head into the offseason with a projected $75 million in salary cap space, more than 29 other teams. Some of that will need to be spent on retaining their free agents, but they should also be extremely active at bringing in new players.</p><p>The rapid 2024 turnaround means Washington can now sell free agents on the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl. A splashy signing such as Higgins at receiver, or even a trade for Garrett, should be on the table. Much like the Commanders, they've got a clear window to build a contender with Drake Maye looking like the real deal on a rookie contract. Does that make the Patriots a logical fit for receivers such as Kupp or Deebo Samuel? Look for a few recognizable names to be connected to New England as the rebuild kicks into high gear.</p><h3>Bears overhauling OL</h3><p>The Bears have a chance to reset their trajectory in one offseason. Landing Ben Johnson as head coach - along with a strong staff that includes Dennis Allen as defensive coordinator - was the most important step. Now, it's time to go to work on the offensive line.</p><p>Chicago has all the cap space it needs to make two impact signings up front. Chiefs Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith should be the top priority. The Ravens' Ronnie Stanley should also be considered as a meaningful upgrade at left tackle. Why not both? The Bears will have more than $60 million in cap space at their disposal.</p><p>Solidifying that group with some aggressive moves and solid draft choices would go a long way toward creating a foundation for Johnson's offense. Quarterback Caleb Williams showed some flashes while taking a beating as a rookie. An improved scheme and protection unit will give him a chance to break out as a sophomore and put the Bears in playoff contention right away.</p>

An all-time great set of physical skills alongside what's now a borderline mistake-free style of play is a devastating combination. Allen's MVP award may be the first of many.</p><p><strong>Lamar Jackson</strong></p><p>Jackson became the first player in NFL history to throw for 40-plus touchdowns and fewer than five interceptions. He also added a position-best 915 rushing yards, a total that pushed him past Michael Vick as the career leader among quarterbacks. Jackson remains the most dangerous weapon in football.</p><p><strong>Joe Burrow</strong></p><p>Burrow would have been right there in the MVP conversation were it not for a dreadful Bengals defense. He bounced back from last year's wrist injury to play the best football of his career, leading the league in yards and touchdowns. He demonstrated en route to a Super Bowl MVP that it doesn't much matter. The Eagles star is an outstanding leader, he throws vertical shots as well as anyone, and he's always at his best in the biggest games. Hurts is also a dynamic runner - he now has the two best rushing performances by a quarterback in Super Bowl history. All he does is win.</p><p><strong>Dak Prescott</strong></p><p>The Cowboys are the butt of a lot of jokes these days, and deservedly so. Prescott catching strays by association is a bridge too far, as he remains one of the best pocket passers in the game. The Cowboys are fortunate to have stumbled onto him, and his extension is one of the few good decisions they've made lately.</p><p><strong>C.J. Stroud</strong></p><p>Stroud struggled at times as a sophomore, but that had more to do with the Texans' scheme and offensive line than a talent regression. Goff's steady presence gives the Lions a chance to soften the blow of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson's departure.</p><p><strong>Geno Smith</strong></p><p>It's easy to understand why people are hesitant to truly believe in Smith's emergence - he spent six years as a backup before finally getting another chance as a starter in Seattle. But the tape doesn't lie. The former Jets bust has revitalized his career to the point where his arm talent and downfield aggressiveness truly elevate the situation around him. The wins will come if the Seahawks can put together an offensive line that doesn't get him beat up.</p><p><strong>Jordan Love</strong></p><p>Love being exposed as a <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/42937743/jordan-love-green-bay-packers-toyotathon-trend">Toyotathon merchant</a> is incredible content. His play isn't actually connected to the annual car sales event's timing (we think), but the hilarious theory perfectly encapsulates his hot-and-cold stretches. There are some rough patches of decision-making and then some playmaking highs that few in the league can match. He's oddly reminiscent of Brett Favre. Complimentary? Derogatory? Depends on the day. The upside is what championship dreams are made of.</p><p><strong>Jayden Daniels</strong></p><p>Daniels was easily the best player in a stacked rookie quarterback class. We'll hold out for another year before moving him even further up this list, but he's off to a fantastic start. Never flustered in the pocket, the LSU product has already shown incredible growth from his college days - and NFL defenders are having just as much trouble catching him as a runner. But that takes nothing away from what he's accomplished in Miami with his elite timing and anticipation. The Dolphins can compete with Tua under center.</p><p><strong>Kyler Murray</strong></p><p>Murray might have a case for a spot in the second tier if this list were only about peaks. His arm talent and ability to make things happen off schedule open the door for all sorts of big plays. But that can't be the basis of an offense. Murray has been far too inconsistent when it comes to working within structure for the Cardinals, and it's fair to wonder whether that will ever change.</p><p><strong>Trevor Lawrence</strong></p><p>Lawrence should be a top-10 quarterback at this point. He's played at that level at times, but the Jaguars' entire operation was a mess last season. Considering the talent Lawrence showed before things started falling apart around him, don't be surprised if new head coach Liam Coen gets him back on track. A healthy Lawrence at the controls of a Bucs-like offense could provide some fireworks.</p><p><strong>Brock Purdy</strong></p><p>The Purdy debate has always been fascinating. His success in his first two seasons was undeniable. But how much of it was due to a cast of superstars? We found out this year as injuries hit the 49ers' offense in a big way. The reality: Purdy probably isn't as bad as he appeared this year, nor as good as he seemed beforehand. Williams still has a chance to be the best quarterback from his class.</p><p><strong>Drake Maye</strong></p><p>Maye's rookie season understandably flew under the radar - most people had stopped paying attention to the Patriots when he took over as the starter. Just make sure you're watching in 2025.<strong> </strong>The No. 3 overall pick was quietly spectacular despite a horrific supporting cast. The upgrade in coaching, along with some potential big-money moves around him, could have Maye poised to take off.</p><p><strong>Bryce Young</strong></p><p>Patience is paying off in Carolina. Young has all but shed the bust label after an incredibly promising sophomore campaign. His size will always present challenges, but his renewed confidence after an early-season benching allowed the playmaking qualities that made him a superstar at Alabama to resurface. Young could soar up this list if next season brings more of the same.</p><p><strong>Bo Nix</strong></p><p>The Broncos may have themselves a quarterback. Some of Nix's rookie-season production can be chalked up to the Broncos' scheme - 26.1% of his pass attempts were to a receiver behind the line of scrimmage, according to Next Gen Stats - but he also flashed the ability to push the ball downfield. The offense did the heavy lifting in 2024 despite some injuries at receiver, with Mayfield leading the way to a fourth-ranked finish in scoring.</p><p><strong>Sam Darnold</strong></p><p>Although Darnold's breakout may have been aided by an outstanding situation in Minnesota, he deserves credit for getting his career back on track. The talent is there if he can continue to improve his decision-making.</p><p><strong>Derek Carr</strong></p><p>Carr is a perfectly fine starter. Gambling on that, and doing everything necessary to make him comfortable, won't be worth it for most teams.</p><p><strong>Kirk Cousins</strong></p><p>Cousins may well be washed, but let's give it one more year to be sure. He revealed after the season that he was playing through arm and shoulder injuries from Week 10 until his benching. Before that point, he was tied for seventh in EPA/dropback. Could he bounce back when healthy? Cousins will be available on a league-minimum deal if the Falcons release him despite a fully guaranteed $27.5-million salary.</p><p><strong>Russell Wilson</strong></p><p>Wilson is a one-trick pony now that age has robbed him of his mobility. Those vertical shots down the sideline are still a beautiful thing, but they can't sustain an offense alone, as the Steelers discovered. Penix is one to watch in 2025.</p><p><strong>Anthony Richardson</strong></p><p>Nobody should give up on Richardson yet. The former No. 3 pick always needed reps to put it all together, and he's shown flashes of the talent that made him such an intriguing prospect. That said, the Colts will run out of patience if his accuracy and decision-making don't improve quickly.</p><p><strong>J.J. McCarthy</strong></p><p>McCarthy seems poised to take over the starting job in Minnesota after missing his rookie season with a knee injury. A lack of athleticism limits him exclusively to the pocket, and he doesn't quite have the arm talent to make that work consistently. He'll have a long career nonetheless.</p><p><strong>Will Levis</strong></p><p>Levis still has some upside. A rare combination of arm talent and athleticism is always worth a look. But the chaotic decision-making that often leaves him watching in disbelief as the defense takes the ball back the other way won't fly in the NFL. Levis needs to rein it in if he's ever going to live up to his potential.</p><p><strong>Drew Lock</strong></p><p>Lock wasn't much of an upgrade over Daniel Jones. He's a backup who has a chance to get hot if he's forced into action.</p><p><strong>Deshaun Watson</strong></p><p>Watson probably won't play next season after a setback in his recovery from an Achilles injury. If his performance is any consideration, the Browns probably won't let him see the field ever again. Only Zach Wilson produced a worse EPA/dropback among QBs with at least 19 starts over the last three seasons. The Watson trade and subsequent contract remain the worst moves in NFL history.</p>

<p>The NFL coaching carousel has slowed to a stop for another year.</p><p>Kellen Moore joining the Saints after helping the Eagles to a Super Bowl title means all seven head coach vacancies have now been filled. While it's impossible to be fully confident in what you're getting from a first-time head coach, coordinator resumes don't get much better than this. Johnson oversaw a top-five offense in both scoring and yards for each of his three seasons with the Lions. Detroit had a talented roster, but the 38-year-old has also earned his reputation as one of football's brightest and most creative play designers.</p><p>Other teams theoretically could've offered Johnson the opportunity to bring his own general manager. There was a brief stretch where it seemed like that might push him elsewhere, and the Bears seemingly lacked focus after they requested interviews with at least 20 candidates. As it turns out, they were just waiting for their shot at the big fish.</p><p>We now know Johnson was always the No. 1 target, and this was the job he wanted. The top available candidate zeroing in on a previously dysfunctional organization is a promising sign that times could finally be changing in Chicago. Instead, he interviewed all of four head coaching candidates and settled on promoting a career assistant with a mediocre track record. It's just the latest example of Jones refusing to put his money where his mouth is.</p><p>This is the Cowboys we're talking about. America's Team. The most valuable organization in professional sports. Jones has claimed there's nothing he wouldn't do to win another Super Bowl. If he was serious, he'd flex his financial muscle and put together the best coaching staff this game has ever seen. But he's not. And it's long past time we accept that he probably never will be.</p><p>Jones would rather stick with coaches who don't command big money and would never even think about seeking some level of personnel control. That's his territory. Even the NFC's longest conference title game drought won't influence him to shake things up. </script></figure><p>Coen initially passing on the Jacksonville job seemingly made it clear to Shad Khan that top head coaching candidates wouldn't be interested with Trent Baalke in the building. And just like that, Khan sent the GM packing.</p><p>Moving on from Baalke was always the sensible move. It's not every day that a coach with one year of NFL coordinator experience has the leverage to influence such decisions, but that tells you everything you need to know about the Jaguars' regard for Coen. The Bucs' offense became a top-five unit under his watch in 2024, with the run game jumping from 32nd to fourth.</p><p>The relatively limited resume does create some level of risk here, but it's absolutely a swing worth taking. Few things in football are as predictable as the Jets imploding the moment their fans allow themselves to believe. But this really does feel like the beginning of a new, more grown-up era in Florham Park. Landing one of the NFL's most coveted head coaching candidates tends to have that effect.</p><p>Glenn had a major role in the Lions' meteoric rise over the past few years. The 2024 campaign was his most impressive work to date as he led the league's seventh-ranked scoring defense despite a rash of injuries. That "next man up" mentality can be taken as a direct reflection of his leadership and ability to have every player prepared.</p><p>The Jets will need to figure out the quarterback situation before they can even dream of sniffing the playoffs, but Glenn seems like the type of coach who will establish a promising foundation while that process works itself out. However, the Patriots weren't going to miss out on an opportunity to reunite with a franchise legend who also happens to be one of the game's most respected coaches.</p><p>Vrabel has a proven track record of getting the most out of his teams. He posted a 54-45 record across six seasons in Tennessee, making three playoff appearances despite some largely mediocre rosters. His defensive background, along with the return of former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, should give New England an excellent foundation for success on both sides of the ball.</p><p>It'll take some time to rebuild a decimated roster, but the Patriots have the No. 4 pick in the draft and a projected $120 million in cap space. Vrabel also inherits a young franchise quarterback in Drake Maye, an advantage he never had with the Titans. </script></figure><p>Raiders fans had to be hoping this would finally be the cycle that brought them a head coach who would stick around for the next decade. In that sense, Pete Carroll may be seen as an underwhelming hire. The 73-year-old is now the oldest coach in NFL history and figures to be a high-floor bridge to the future. You can't argue with the quality of the coach, though.</p><p>Carroll is among the great program builders of the modern era. He's one of only three coaches to win both a college national championship and a Super Bowl, and the Seahawks were in the playoffs 10 times during his 14-year tenure.</p><p>This could've become a particularly uninspiring hire if Carroll stuck with familiarity and reunited with his old assistants from Seattle. Keeping Patrick Graham as his defensive coordinator and hiring Chip Kelly to be his offensive coordinator are promising signs of his willingness to adapt.</p><p>Even if his age limits the long-term upside, the Raiders couldn't pass on the opportunity to establish some stability for the first time in the last two decades. Mark Davis and Tom Brady needed to get things back on track before worrying too much about the distant future. </script></figure><p>The Saints were always going to have a tough time filling this job. Aaron Glenn seemed like the top target before he chose the Jets (the Jets!). Pivoting to Joe Brady would've been the next logical move, but the Bills offensive coordinator chose to run it back in Buffalo.</p><p>In the end, the finalists for the job apparently included Moore, Mike Kafka, Anthony Weaver, and Darren Rizzi. Moore is the most recognizable name of the bunch, and it won't be tough to sell this hire after his offense helped the Eagles steamroll the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. But it's no slam dunk.</p><p>We know Moore can dial up plays for a group led by Jalen Hurts, the best offensive line in football, and a ridiculous collection of superstars at the skill positions. How different does that look when he's not working with such an overwhelming talent advantage? It's worth noting that Moore's 2023 Chargers offense was the lowest-scoring unit of Justin Herbert's career. The Saints could also be fighting an uphill battle for years to come with their never-ending cap issues. Ownership will have to be patient because there just isn't much to work with. It may have to get worse before it gets better.</p>
