The San Diego Padres agreed to a four-year contract with free-agent pitcher Drew Pomeranz, the team announced Wednesday.

The 31-year-old lefty pitched for San Diego in 2016 before he was traded to the Boston Red Sox.

His new contract is reportedly worth $34 million, which includes an $8-million signing bonus, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Year Salary

2021 $6M

Pomeranz is expected to pitch in relief in 2020, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal added. He'll join a Padres bullpen that ranked among MLB's best last season.

After beginning 2019 as a starter with the San Francisco Giants, Pomeranz was sent to the Milwaukee Brewers in July.

He then posted a 2.39 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP with a 15.4 K/9 rate across 25 appearances out of the Brewers' bullpen.

In nine big-league seasons, Pomeranz is 46-58 with a 4.04 ERA, a 4.20 FIP, and a 1.36 WHIP in 814 innings. Of his 242 major-league outings, 102 have come as a reliever.
