Report: Yankees eyeing Adames if Soto signs elsewhere

The New York Yankees are preparing for the potential loss of star outfielder Juan Soto.

If Soto picks a new team in free agency, one of the Yankees' contingency plans is pivoting to shortstop Willy Adames, sources told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

New York already has 2023 Gold Glover Anthony Volpe playing short, so Adames could slide to second base or third base if Jazz Chisholm Jr. goes back to the keystone position where he's made 156 starts over his five-year career. Adames would prefer to remain at shortstop but is open to a change in the right situation, a source told Feinsand.

"It's always a sliding scale on dollars," the source said. "If someone is going to pay you substantially more to play another position, you tend to be more OK with it."

Adames is reportedly seeking a long-term deal in the $150-million to $200-million range.

The 29-year-old is coming off a career year in which he recorded 32 homers, 112 RBIs, 21 stolen bases, and a .794 OPS over 161 games for the Milwaukee Brewers.
