Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story underwent a successful sports hernia repair, the team announced Friday.
Story weighed his options in recent days after landing on the 10-day injury list and ultimately decided to have surgery.
"The basic prognosis is 6-10 weeks, give or take," Story said last Saturday of his potential return timeline, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com.
Story has been dealing with the hernia issue since spring training.
The 33-year-old has battled several injuries since joining the Red Sox in 2022, playing only 163 games through his first three seasons in Boston. The two-time All-Star did stay healthy in '25, hitting 25 home runs with 96 RBIs in 157 appearances.
Story is hitting .206 with three homers in 41 games this season.
Marcelo Mayer, Boston's everyday second baseman, will slide over to shortstop while Story is sidelined, manager Chad Tracy said Friday, according to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald. Mayer is starting Friday's game at the keystone and will likely make the switch Sunday. The 23-year-old played 269 minor-league games at shortstop but was moved off the position upon reaching the majors in deference to Story.
With Mayer shifting positions, the Red Sox will use a combination of Andruw Monasterio, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Nick Sogard at second, Tracy added.
The Red Sox entered play Friday with a 22-27 record, good for fourth place in the competitive AL East.
