The Toronto Blue Jays traded reliever Jeff Hoffman and cash to the Minnesota Twins for left-hander Dasan Hill, right-hander John Klein, and second baseman/outfielder Dameury Pena, the teams announced Monday.
The cash sent to Minnesota will cover part of Hoffman's 2027 salary, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
Hoffman is in the second season of a three-year, $33-million deal he signed with Toronto following his 2024 All-Star campaign with the Philadelphia Phillies. The 33-year-old was the Blue Jays' closer for much of last year and anchored the team's pennant-winning bullpen, but he surrendered a game-tying homer to Miguel Rojas in the ninth inning of Game 7 in the 2025 World Series.
This season, Hoffman owns a 3.94 ERA, 2.49 FIP, and 1.38 WHIP with 75 strikeouts and just four homers allowed in 51 appearances. He began the year as Toronto's closer but was removed from ninth-inning duties after early-season struggles. However, the change in role has helped. Since June 1, Hoffman has recorded a 1.21 ERA with 30 strikeouts, eight walks, and one homer allowed in 22 1/3 frames.
Hill ranked as the Twins' No. 7 prospect by MLB.com prior to the trade, while Klein slotted in as Minnesota's No. 17 prospect.
The 21-year-old Hill owns a 5.80 ERA and 1.73 WHIP over 16 starts with High-A Cedar Rapids this season. Though Hill sports a K/9 of 15.4 over his 45 innings this year, he also has an inflated 7.4 BB/9.
Klein, 24, made his big-league debut earlier this campaign but is currently pitching in Triple-A. The Minnesota native is posting a 5.91 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and 74 strikeouts over 64 innings split between the rotation and bullpen for Triple-A St. Paul.
Pena, 20, is hitting .300/.373/.362 with one homer, 47 RBIs, and 20 steals over 83 games between Low-A and High-A this year. Primarily a second baseman, he's seen time at the keystone, left field, and third base early in his professional career.
