Yankees' game-tying HR taken away after fan interference

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 07: Victor Mesa Jr. #25 of the Tampa Bay Rays is unable to make a catch as fans interfere on a ball hit by Anthony Volpe #11 of the New York Yankees during the sixth inning in game three of the American League Division Series at Yankee Stadium on October 07, 2026 in the Bronx borough of New York City.

Fan interference cost the New York Yankees a home run that could have tied Game 3 of their American League Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays in the sixth inning.

Trailing 4-2, New York appeared to tie the game when Anthony Volpe hit a two-run homer into the left-field stands.

However, umpires overturned the call and changed it to an RBI double after replay determined a fan reached over the wall and interfered with the ball.

"After viewing all relevant angles, the replay official definitively determined the spectator interfered with the ball over the field of play. The ball would not have left the playing field, nor would it have been caught," read a statement from the MLB's Replay Operations Center, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

New York ultimately stranded Volpe at second base, finishing the inning still behind 4-3.

The Yankees ended up losing to the Rays by a run, ending their season in the process.
