It turns out RJ Barrett is not a born southpaw.
The New York Knicks rookie - who shoots left-handed - told reporters Wednesday that he's naturally right-handed but is more comfortable using his non-dominant hand for shots. Barrett added that he's been told his righty form is better, but that he doesn't necessarily believe that's the case, according to Newsday's Laura Albanese.
Barrett first disclosed this during a June episode of ESPN's "First Take."
Shooting hasn't been Barrett's main strength in his first NBA season. He's hit just 39% from the field, 31% from deep, and 60% from the foul line.
The 19-year-old has been shooting primarily with his left hand since he was a top prep prospect as an early teen in the Toronto area. He said Wednesday that his mother is left-handed, and that he picked up some of her habits, although he does most things right-handed.
There are 49 left-handed shooters in the NBA this season, according to Basketball-Reference.
