The Memphis Grizzlies have waived Marc Gasol, the team announced Wednesday, possibly spelling the end of the former Defensive Player of the Year's time stateside.

Basketball insider Marc Stein previously reported that Gasol is expected to play for Girona, the Spanish club he founded in 2014.

The move comes days after the team reacquired its former franchise big man from the Los Angeles Lakers in what amounted to a salary dump. For eating Gasol's $2.7-million cap hit, Los Angeles sent Memphis a 2024 second-round pick. The Grizzlies included the draft rights to 2016 No. 57 pick Wang Zhelin.

The Lakers originally drafted Gasol with the 48th pick in 2007, though he played overseas in his native Spain in 2007-08. Los Angeles included his draft rights in the blockbuster deal when the team acquired Marc's older brother Pau Gasol from Memphis in 2008.

Gasol averaged 15.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game with the Grizzlies from 2008 through his trade to the Toronto Raptors in 2019, earning All-Star nods in 2012, 2015, and 2017 and being named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2012-13. He won a title in 2019 with Toronto.
