Report: Chargers' Herbert 'very likely' to undergo finger surgery
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is "very likely" to have surgery on his fractured right index finger Tuesday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Herbert's status for the remainder of the season will be determined by the operation, Schefter adds.
It was reported earlier Monday that Herbert wasn't expected to play Thursday night against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Head coach Brandon Staley wouldn't comment Monday on Herbert's status but said the team is "going to do whatever's best for Justin long term," according to NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano.
Easton Stick took over under center after the Chargers ruled Herbert out of Sunday's contest, and he completed 13 of 24 passes for 179 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Stick is the only other quarterback on Los Angeles' active roster. Rookie Max Duggan is currently on the club's practice squad.
Herbert injured a finger on his non-throwing hand earlier in the season but didn't miss a start.
The Oregon product has thrown for 3,134 yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 13 games this campaign.
The Chargers have stumbled to a 5-8 record in 2023, tied with the Raiders for the worst mark in the AFC West.
