Columbus Blue Jackets star defenseman Zach Werenski vetoed a trade to the Dallas Stars, sources told Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
The Norris Trophy winner has a full no-movement clause and must give his approval to be traded.
Werenski's preference is to stay in the East, with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs considered agreeable destinations, reports The Athletic's Chris Johnston.
Dallas blue-liner Thomas Harley would've been the centerpiece of Columbus' return, which may have also included picks and prospects, reports Friedman.
Werenski is signed through the 2027-28 campaign at a cap hit just over $9.5 million. He told the Blue Jackets in April that he would play out his contract but wouldn't commit to an extension in Columbus, reports Friedman.
The 28-year-old is eligible to sign an extension beginning July 1, 2027.
Werenski tallied 22 goals and 81 points in 75 games en route to being named the NHL's top defenseman for the first time in 2025-26. He won Olympic gold with Team USA in February.
The Stars inked Harley to an eight-year extension with a $10.6-million cap hit in October 2025. He has no trade protection through the 2028-29 season.
Harley played for Canada at the Olympics in February. The 24-year-old had six goals and 36 points in 70 games this season after notching 16 goals and 50 points in 2024-25.
