The Vancouver Canucks traded defenseman Marcus Pettersson to the New York Rangers for a conditional first-round pick in 2030, the teams announced.

The selection is top-10 protected, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Pettersson is under contract through 2031 at a cap hit of $5.5 million. The Canucks acquired him from the Pittsburgh Penguins in February 2025 for a first-round pick obtained from the New York Rangers via the J.T. Miller trade.

Pettersson previously played under Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan while with the Penguins. The 30-year-old is known for his defensive presence rather than his offensive contributions. Last season, Pettersson notched 18 points in 82 games with the last-place Canucks while averaging over 21 minutes per contest.

The Rangers also acquired defenseman Sean Durzi from the Utah Mammoth earlier Wednesday, helping solidify a defensive corps that features Adam Fox and Vladislav Gavrikov.

New York had already added Pavel Dorofeyev, Oliver Bjorkstrand, and Joe Veleno up front this summer. The Rangers missed the playoffs this past season and subsequently announced a commitment to retool their roster.
