The Ottawa Senators signed defenseman Jordan Spence to a four-year contract extension worth $5 million per season, the team announced Friday.
Spence was scheduled for restricted free agency July 1. The Senators acquired him from the Los Angeles Kings for a third-round draft pick last June.
The 25-year-old posted a career-high 31 points in 73 games in his debut season in Ottawa while averaging 18:44 per contest. The Senators controlled 61.73% of expected goals with Spence on the ice at five-on-five this past season, according to Evolving-Hockey.
"Jordan was an excellent addition to our hockey club and proved to be a valuable asset on our blue line and stepped up when it counted last season," general manager Steve Staios said in a statement. "We're excited to have him as part of our core group."
Ottawa has had a busy offseason to date, headlined by trading former captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. The Senators subsequently flipped one of the first-round picks they acquired from Florida to add William Eklund from the San Jose Sharks.
The club still has about $14.6 million in cap space this offseason, per PuckPedia.
