The Los Angeles Dodgers have shipped former top catching prospect Diego Cartaya to the Minnesota Twins for minor-league pitcher Jose Vasquez, the teams announced Thursday.

The Dodgers designated Cartaya for assignment last week to make room on the active roster for newly acquired infielder Hyeseong Kim.

Cartaya, 23, entered the 2023 season atop Los Angeles' prospect rankings and 14th overall on MLB Pipeline. The team signed him as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2018.

The once-promising catcher reached Triple-A last season but struggled at the plate in his 49 appearances: He slashed just .208/.293/.350 with six home runs while striking out 57 times in 183 at-bats.

He now slots in as the Twins' 23rd-ranked prospect, per MLB Pipeline.

Vasquez, 20, pitched in 11 games for the Dominican Summer League Twins in 2024. He struck out 45 batters in 30 2/3 innings.
