The red-hot Miami Marlins intend to be buyers at the trade deadline and aren't planning to part with ace Sandy Alcantara, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
Riding a 16-4 record in their last 20 games, the Marlins enter Friday tied for the National League's second wild-card spot and just three games back of the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East.
Alcantara's bounce-back campaign has been a major reason for the club's success. The 2022 NL Cy Young winner is 10-4 with a 4.00 ERA while throwing an MLB-high 123.2 innings.
The 30-year-old was rumored to be a trade candidate at last year's deadline and throughout the offseason. Alcantara holds a $21-million player option for 2027 and can become a free agent in 2028.
Miami's potential deadline needs include a third baseman, a late-inning reliever, and starting pitching depth, Rosenthal adds. The Marlins are reportedly open to trading off their MLB roster to protect their farm system.
