The Toronto Blue Jays are acquiring right-hander José Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels for prized shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, the teams announced Monday.
Nimmala was a first-round draft pick in 2023 and the Blue Jays' second-ranked prospect. He's played in four different minor leagues this season, reaching as high as double-A with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Nimmala is MLB Pipeline's 43rd-ranked prospect.
The Angels are also receiving outfielder Eddie Micheletti Jr. and right-hander Angel Rivero in the deal.
Soriano, 27, is 9-6 this season with a 3.29 ERA. He's arbitration-eligible the next two offseasons and will factor into the Blue Jays' starting rotation going forward alongside the likes of Dylan Cease and Trey Yesavage.
Toronto's acquisition of Soriano comes one day after the team traded veteran Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs. Gausman is a pending free agent, and the Blue Jays, who sit last in the American League East, entered the trade deadline expected to be sellers.
