Michigan is finalizing a deal with assistant Mike Boynton Jr. that would make him Dusty May's interim replacement at head coach, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel, Jeff Borzello, and Adam Schefter.
Boynton, 44, held the head coaching position at Oklahoma State for seven seasons before being fired after the 2023-24 campaign. He went a combined 119-109 with the Cowboys before joining May's staff at Michigan in April 2024.
May is reportedly headed to the NBA to lead the Dallas Mavericks.
Boynton was May's first hire at Michigan and served as the team's defensive coordinator. Under Boynton's watch last season, the Wolverines limited opponents to 38.2% shooting, the best mark in Division I. Their stifling defense was a significant factor in their national championship win over UConn in April; Michigan held the Huskies to a season-low field-goal percentage of 30.9%, and UConn's 63 points were the fourth fewest scored by Dan Hurley's squad across 40 games last season.
Boynton could also be promoted to full-time head coach in the coming weeks, a source told Matt Norlander of CBS Sports.
