The NCAA sent a letter of inquiry to Cincinnati that focuses on former quarterback Brendan Sorsby's time with the program, sources told ESPN's Eli Lederman.
Sorsby spent two seasons with Cincinnati before transferring to Texas Tech in January. This spring, the NCAA ruled him permanently ineligible after he admitted to placing thousands of bets worth close to $90,000 over the past four years while at Indiana, Texas Tech, and Cincinnati.
Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction last month, clearing a path for him to play with the Red Raiders in 2026. However, he withdrew his lawsuit against the NCAA on June 15 after the Big 12 sought a court order to enforce its bylaws and impose potential punishment against him.
Sorsby is preparing for the 2027 NFL Draft after the league declined to hold a supplemental draft this summer.
Although Cincinnati head coach Scott Satterfield declined to comment on the NCAA's letter of inquiry on Wednesday, a school spokesperson issued a statement regarding the situation.
"We have had continuous conversations with the NCAA since the initial reports related to impermissible sports wagering began," the statement reads, per Lederman. "As we have stated before, we do not believe any athletics official or staff member was aware of any impermissible sports wagering."
After beginning his collegiate career at Indiana, Sorsby joined Cincinnati ahead of the 2024 season. He flourished as the Bearcats' starting quarterback, passing for 5,613 yards and 45 touchdowns over two years.
Cincinnati is suing Sorsby for a breach of contract following his transfer to Texas Tech. Satterfield told The Athletic's Chris Vannini on Wednesday that the Red Raiders were among multiple schools that contacted Sorsby about transferring before the 2025 season ended.
Texas Tech has denied any wrongdoing, saying it's "not aware of any impermissible contact" during Sorsby's recruitment, according to Vannini.
