Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray said splitting starter reps with J.J. McCarthy in practice hasn't been easy while learning a new offense.

"I was (in Arizona) for seven years. I know I had two different offensive systems (there), but at the same time, you're getting all those reps," Murray told reporters.

"Now, having to split reps, it's me already being behind, not getting the amount of reps that you would typically want a guy to get learning an offense. That's probably the toughest part."

Murray is battling McCarthy for the starting job after joining the team on a one-year, $1.3-million contract in March. He'll collect $35.5 million from the Arizona Cardinals as part of his release while playing under a five-year, $230-million deal he signed in 2022.

The 28-year-old started just five games last season due to a foot injury he suffered in early October. He's suited up in 30 games over the last three seasons, going 13-17 with 6,612 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions during that stretch.

McCarthy, who was selected 10th overall in the 2024 draft, started 10 games last year and missed time with multiple ailments. He also sat out his entire rookie season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

The 23-year-old showed flashes down the stretch but struggled overall in his first campaign as the primary starter, throwing for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 picks. Out of 33 qualifying quarterbacks in 2025, McCarthy ranked 32nd in EPA/dropback and last in passer rating, according to TruMedia.

"I'm not too worried about the competition side of things, honestly. ... The competitor that I am, obviously, everybody out here holds themselves to a high standard," Murray said.

"And that's the unfortunate part when you do have days when you feel like, 'I wish I had that back, I wish I had that throw back,' whatever it is, coaches reminding you ... 'Hey, this is a learning phase.'"

Minnesota's mandatory minicamp is underway. The final day is Thursday.
