Xander Bogaerts is planning to opt out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox following the 2022 campaign, sources close to the star shortstop told Joon Lee of ESPN.

Bogaerts reportedly hopes to stay with the Red Sox and finish his career with the only major-league club he's played for.

The 29-year-old is also open to switching positions, according to Lee. Boston manager Alex Cora was noncommittal when asked Monday if he saw Bogaerts and third baseman Rafael Devers remaining at their respective positions.

As for renegotiating with Bogaerts and Devers, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said Monday that both infielders are "cornerstone players for us," according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.

Bloom added: "They are guys you want here as long as you can have them here. ... They're going to be a huge part of our success going forward. ... We want them here and we want to win with them."

Bogaerts, who signed a six-year, $120-million extension in April 2019, owns a career .290/.353/.459 slash line with 141 home runs and 610 RBIs over nine seasons with the Red Sox. He's a three-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger.
