Benches clear between Orioles, Red Sox after double play

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox benches cleared Friday night after Luis Robert Jr. grounded into an eighth-inning-ending double play, presumably due to a dispute over Blaze Alexander's slide into second base.

With Boston leading 1-0 and Alexander on first, Robert grounded to shortstop Trevor Story. Second baseman Nick Sogard took Story's flip and fired to first to complete the play.

But as Alexander left the area of second base, he appeared to exchange angry words with Story and both were restrained.

Replays showed that Alexander slid hard and continued past the bag after touching second, but didn't appear to make contact with Sogard.

The benches and bullpens emptied, and Alexander later motioned his hands upward asking fans to make more noise. No one was ejected.
