Report: Oilers expected to sign Frederic to 8-year deal worth roughly $30M
The Edmonton Oilers are expected to sign pending unrestricted free-agent forward Trent Frederic to an eight-year contract with an average annual value between $3.5 million and $4 million, Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli reports.
The deal isn't expected to be officially announced in the near future as the Oilers are engaging in contract talks with other players on the roster, Seravalli adds.
The contract will also include a modified no-movement clause, according to theScore's John Matisz.
The Oilers acquired Frederic from the Boston Bruins at the trade deadline for a package that included a second-round pick, but an injury limited him to just one regular-season game for Edmonton. The 27-year-old returned for the postseason, managing just a goal and three assists in 22 contests while averaging 11:24 per game.
Frederic notched eight goals and seven assists in 57 games with the Bruins before the trade. He set career highs with 18 goals, 22 assists, and 40 points in 82 contests in 2023-24.
The 6-foot-3, 221-pound power forward plays a physical brand of hockey, racking up 157 hits in the regular season and 84 in the playoffs. Frederic also brings some positional versatility. He played center at times over the last two seasons but has primarily been used on the wing throughout his seven-year career.
The Bruins drafted Frederic 29th overall in 2016.
The Oilers will have roughly $8 million in cap space once the contract is completed. Evan Bouchard is a restricted free agent and due for a sizeable pay raise from his previous cap hit of $3.9 million. Edmonton's other pending UFAs include Corey Perry, Jeff Skinner, Connor Brown, Kasperi Kapanen, and John Klingberg.
